MSU-SASE 2026: The Complete Guide for Filipino Applicants

The Mindanao State University System Admission and Scholarship Examination is the entrance test for all 8 MSU campuses — Marawi, IIT (Iligan), Naawan, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao, General Santos, Buug, and Lopez Jaena. About 30,000 applicants sit for it each cycle, and the acceptance rate hovers around 35% — variable by campus + programme.

What makes MSU-SASE unique among CET-cluster exams: passing automatically qualifies you for tuition discount or full scholarship under MSU's mandate as a state university serving Mindanao. The exam is admission + scholarship in one.

For 2026: MSU's published schedule runs MSU-SASE in August 2026 with results in November. Application opens via the SASE portal in June 2026. Verify on msumain.edu.ph.

1. What the MSU-SASE tests

The MSU-SASE is a 4-section exam, ~3 hours total:

1. English Proficiency — grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension
2. Mathematics — algebra, geometry, basic statistics
3. Science — biology, chemistry, physics fundamentals
4. Mental Aptitude — pattern recognition, abstract reasoning, basic logic

Multiple choice with 4 options. ~150 items total.

The Math + Science scope is similar to UPCAT but lighter on calculus. Mental Aptitude is similar to USTET's section. SASE doesn't test Filipino as a separate section.

2. The scholarship-admission link

This is what makes MSU-SASE distinctive:

• Top tier (composite ≥ 80%): Full tuition + monthly stipend + book allowance scholarship
• Mid tier (composite 70–79%): 50% tuition discount
• Standard tier (composite 60–69%): Admission with no scholarship; tuition is already low (~₱5,000–₱20,000/year for most programmes due to RA 10931 + MSU mandate)
• Below 60%: Doesn't qualify for admission

Compared to UP (free under RA 10931 only after admission, no merit scholarship for top scorers), MSU's scholarship system actively funds the top tier with stipends + book allowances. For Class C–D applicants in Mindanao + Sulu + Tawi-Tawi, MSU-SASE is one of the highest-leverage applications you can make.

3. Programme cutoffs by campus

MSU's 8-campus network has different competitive intensities:

MSU IIT (Iligan) is consistently the most competitive — it has the country's only ABET-accredited engineering programmes outside Metro Manila and is highly regarded by industry recruiters.

4. The 60-day prep plan

Calibrated for SHS graduates running parallel UPCAT + ACET prep.

Weeks 1–2: Diagnose

One full timed mock. Most takers score 65–75 cold. Identify weak sections.

Weeks 3–6: Focused drill

• Mon/Wed/Fri (90 min): Math + Science rotation
• Tue/Thu (90 min): Mental Aptitude + English
• Saturday (3 hrs): Mixed mock
• Sunday: Off

Weeks 7–8: Mock + final

Two full mocks per week.

5. The Mindanao advantage

If you're a Mindanao + Sulu + Tawi-Tawi applicant, MSU-SASE is genuinely the highest-leverage application:

1. Free or near-free tuition through RA 10931 + MSU mandate
2. Scholarship system actively funds top scorers with stipends + book allowances
3. Local campus network — most applicants don't have to relocate
4. Strong industry placement — particularly MSU IIT for engineering, MSU Naawan for marine biology, MSU Main for general fields

For Luzon + Visayas applicants, MSU is less competitive than UP but still credible if you qualify for IIT or Main.

6. What it costs

MSU-SASE application: ~₱500. One of the cheapest CET-cluster applications.

Most takers self-study using past papers + UPCAT reviewers (which cover most of the scope). Paid review centres add little leverage.
