MSU-SASE English Review: Grammar, Vocabulary and Usage
MSU doesn't publish an official breakdown of the SASE, but past takers consistently describe English questions — grammar, vocabulary and reading. This post covers grammar and vocabulary; reading has its own review.
Grammar
The rules behind most errors in entrance-test English items:
- Subject–verb agreement — especially with long subjects, "each", "either/neither", "none" and collective nouns
- Pronouns — clear reference, correct case (I/me, who/whom)
- Verb tense — consistency within a sentence, and the perfect tenses
- Modifiers — misplaced and dangling modifiers
- Parallel structure — lists and comparisons in the same form
- Word choice — commonly confused pairs: affect/effect, its/it's, than/then, their/there
For "spot the error" items, read the whole sentence, then test each underlined part against one rule at a time.
Vocabulary
- Synonyms and antonyms
- Meaning from context
- Prefixes, suffixes and roots (un-, mis-, -ology, bio-, geo-)
- Common idioms and collocations
Daily reading builds vocabulary faster than memorising lists. Keep a notebook of new words from what you read and review it weekly.
Sentence completion and improvement
- Completion: read the whole sentence, find the clue words ("although", "because", "however"), and predict the kind of word needed before looking at the options.
- Improvement: choose the version that is correct, clear and concise. If the original is already correct, say so — don't change it just to change it.

Read one English editorial or news article a day throughout. If English isn't the language you use most at home, this daily habit matters even more.
