MSU-SASE Reading Comprehension Review

MSU doesn't publish an official breakdown of the SASE, but reading passages with questions are a standard part of college entrance English, and past takers describe them on the SASE too. Reading also affects every other area — a misread math word problem costs as much as a grammar mistake.

Question types to expect

  • Main idea — what the whole passage is about
  • Detail — facts stated in the passage
  • Inference — what the passage suggests without saying directly
  • Vocabulary in context — what a word means as it's used
  • Author's purpose and tone — to inform, persuade, criticise
  • Structure — how paragraphs or ideas connect

How to read a passage

  1. Skim the questions first so you know what to look for.
  2. Read the passage once, actively. Note the topic sentence of each paragraph and signal words ("however", "therefore", "in contrast").
  3. Go back to the text for every answer. Don't answer from memory or from what you already believe.
  4. Watch for traps: options that repeat words from the passage but change the meaning, or that are true in general but not stated in the passage.

Build the habit

Read one English editorial or feature article a day. After reading, say the main idea in one sentence. This builds reading speed and vocabulary together. If English isn't the language you use most at home, the daily habit matters even more.

A three-week plan

WeekFocus
1Daily reading + 3–4 short timed passages; main idea and detail questions
2Daily reading + 5–6 timed passages; inference and vocabulary questions
3Daily reading + mixed timed passages; review every wrong answer
