How GWA is calculated

GWA = Σ(grade × units) ÷ Σ(units)

Multiply each subject's grade by its number of units, add up all those products, then divide by the total units. Subjects worth more units move your GWA more. On the 1.00–5.00 scale a lower GWA is better (1.00 is the highest possible mark).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you compute GWA?

GWA (General Weighted Average) = the sum of (each subject's grade × its units) divided by the total units. So multiply every grade by the number of units for that subject, add all those products, then divide by the total number of units. Subjects with more units count more toward your GWA.

On the 1.00–5.00 college scale, lower is better. A GWA of 1.00–1.20 is typically summa cum laude, 1.21–1.45 magna cum laude, and 1.46–1.75 cum laude at many universities. A GWA of 1.75 or better is generally considered very strong. Exact honor cutoffs vary by university.

They measure the same idea — an average of your grades weighted by units — but the scales differ. Philippine universities usually use a 1.00–5.00 GWA where 1.00 is highest, while GPA is often on a 4.0 scale where 4.0 is highest. This calculator supports both the 1.00–5.00 scale and a percentage scale.

In most schools, yes — a failing grade (e.g. 5.00) is included in your GWA with its units, which pulls the average down. Some schools recompute after a retake. Check your registrar's specific policy, as it affects both your GWA and your eligibility for Latin honors.
