BFP Entrance 2026: The Complete Guide for Filipino Applicants
The Bureau of Fire Protection Entrance Examination is the cognitive aptitude screen for Fire Officer 1 (FO1) recruitment — the entry rank of PH firefighters. About 10,000 takers sit for it annually across multiple cycles, and the qualifying rate is around 35% — lower than NAPOLCOM PNPE because BFP runs a tighter cut for limited slots.
This guide covers the test format, the full BFP application pipeline (cognitive exam → PAT → medical → neuro-psych → background → interview), Fire Officer 1 pay + benefits, and an 8-week prep plan.
For 2026: BFP runs the entrance exam in multiple cycles per year — typically March, July, October. Schedules are announced via BFP regional offices and on bfp.gov.ph 6–8 weeks before each cycle.
1. What the BFP Entrance Exam tests
The exam is a single 3-hour cognitive aptitude test, similar in scope to NAPOLCOM PNPE:
- Verbal Comprehension — vocabulary, reading comprehension (40 items)
- Quantitative Ability — arithmetic, ratio + proportion, basic algebra (40 items)
- Logical + Abstract Reasoning — pattern recognition, syllogisms (40 items)
- General Information — PH history, geography, current events, basic BFP knowledge (40 items)
Total ~160 items, multiple choice with 4 options. No negative marking.
The General Information section includes BFP-specific content: organisational structure, fire suppression basics, RA 9263 (BFP Modernization Act), and major PH fire codes (RA 9514 — Revised Fire Code of the Philippines).
2. The qualifying score
BFP's qualifying threshold varies cycle-to-cycle:
- Top tier (priority appointment): ≥ 80% raw
- Qualifying band: 60–80%
- Below 60%: Doesn't qualify
Like NAPOLCOM, qualifying isn't the same as appointed. BFP appoints from the top of the qualifier ranking down until slots are filled. Aim for 75%+ to be appointment-eligible within 12 months.
3. The full BFP application pipeline
The cognitive exam is just the first gate. After passing:
- Physical Agility Test (PAT): 100m sprint, 1.5km run, push-ups, sit-ups. Standards: 12 push-ups + 24 sit-ups in 1 minute (males), proportional standards for females. Train 6+ weeks before sitting PAT.
- Medical Examination: Vision (20/20 corrected), hearing, dental, BMI within limits, no major chronic conditions
- Neuro-Psychiatric Examination: Standard PNP-style screening covering cognitive function, mood disorders, personality
- Background Investigation: NBI clearance + character references + community check
- Final Interview: With the BFP recruitment board, regional level
Total pipeline: 8–14 months from passing the cognitive exam to entering BFP basic training (Public Safety Officer Senior Leadership Course or PSOSLC at the BFP Academy).
4. The 8-week prep plan
Calibrated for an applicant working a 40-hour week.
Weeks 1–2: Diagnose
One full timed mock. Most takers score 60–72 cold. Most common weak areas: Quantitative Ability + General Information (BFP-specific content).
Weeks 3–6: Focused drill
- Mon/Wed/Fri (90 min): Weakest section
- Tue/Thu (90 min): Second weakest
- Saturday (3 hrs): Mixed mock + General Information memorisation
- Sunday: Off
For General Information: study (a) RA 9263 BFP modernization, (b) RA 9514 Revised Fire Code, (c) major PH fires (Kentex, Ozone, etc.) + lessons learned, (d) BFP organisational structure (national HQ, regional, station ranks).
Weeks 7–8: Mock + taper
Two full mocks per week. Final 3 days: rest + flashcards.
5. Fire Officer 1 pay + benefits
Entry rank is Fire Officer 1 (FO1):
- Monthly basic pay: ₱31,151 in 2026 (MUP Base Pay Schedule, EO 107 s. 2025 — BFP uses the same schedule as PNP and AFP, not the civilian SSL)
- PERA: ₱2,000/month
- Subsistence allowance: ₱350/day (~₱10,500/month, raised under EO 107)
- Hazard pay: ~₱590/month
- Total cash compensation: ~₱42,000–₱46,000/month entry
See the full BFP salary 2026 guide for the rank-by-rank pay table up to Fire Director.
The promotion ladder runs:
- FO1 → FO2 — 5 years TIG
- FO2 → FO3 — 8 years
- FO3 → FO Senior — varies
- Officer track (Inspector → Senior Inspector → ...) reachable for FOs who complete a Bachelor's + officer course
Mandatory retirement: 56 years OR 30 years of service.
6. BFP Entrance vs NAPOLCOM PNPE vs AFPSAT
If you're choosing between uniformed services:
| Aspect | BFP Entrance | NAPOLCOM PNPE | AFPSAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Career | Fire suppression + emergency response | Police + community service | Military defence |
| Subjects | 4 cognitive subtests + BFP info | 5 cognitive subtests | 5 cognitive subtests |
| PAT requirements | Moderate | Higher (PNP standards) | Highest (military) |
| Schedule | 3x per year | 2x per year (Mar + Oct) | 4x per year |
| Career stability | Stable; lower deployment risk than AFP | Stable; community policing | Both stable; AFP has deployment risk |
| Entry pay | ~₱42-46k total comp | ~₱42-46k total comp | ~₱42k enlisted / ₱58k+ officer |
BFP has the lowest deployment risk + steady career growth. NAPOLCOM is similar pay band with more community-engagement flavour. AFPSAT has higher pay but higher deployment risk.
You can take all three — they don't compete administratively. Many applicants pass multiple and apply to whichever opens slots first.
7. What it costs
| Path | Cost |
|---|---|
| BFP review materials (BFP regional office) | Free |
| Online review course | ₱1,500 – ₱4,000 |
| Self-study with reviewer books | ₱500 – ₱1,500 |
| Free past papers + structured tool | ₱500 – ₱2,000 |
Application fee: ₱500. Among the cheapest major PH exams to prepare for. Most takers self-study with free past papers + a single reviewer book.
8. If you don't qualify
About 65% of takers don't clear. Retake within the next cycle (typically 4 months wait). Most second-cycle takers pass with focused drill on weak sections.
If repeated failure: consider switching to NAPOLCOM PNPE (lighter physical demands than AFPSAT, slightly different cognitive emphasis).
