BFP Exam Analytical Ability Review: Logical Reasoning Practice
BFP Exam Analytical Ability Review
The BFP's written exam is the CSC Fire Officer Examination (FOE). Its General Ability part (25% of the exam) covers verbal, analytical and numerical ability; the other 75% is fire-service content. This post covers the analytical side — what many reviewers call "logical reasoning".
What to practice
CSC doesn't publish a breakdown of the FOE's analytical items or sample questions. The closest public guide is the CSE's Analytical Ability part, which CSC describes as word analogy, logical and abstract reasoning, assumptions and conclusions, and data interpretation. Practicing those item types covers the likely ground.
Word analogy. State the relationship in a sentence ("A hose is used to deliver water") and test each option with the same sentence. Common relationships: part–whole, tool–use, cause–effect, degree, category–member.
Syllogisms and conditional reasoning. Work with "All / Some / No" statements and "if–then" rules. From "If P then Q": the contrapositive (if not Q then not P) is valid; the converse (if Q then P) and inverse (if not P then not Q) are not. Draw quick Venn diagrams for "some" and "no" statements.
Assumptions and conclusions. Decide what must be true given a short passage — not what is probably true or what you'd personally agree with. Watch for options that go one step beyond the text.
Data interpretation. Read tables and simple charts, then answer percentage, ratio and comparison questions. This overlaps with numerical ability, so it pays twice.
Series and patterns. Number and letter series (convert letters to alphabet positions) and figure patterns. Look for differences, alternating sequences, squares and cubes.
A 3-week drill plan
| Week | Focus | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Analogies + syllogisms | About 60 items |
| 2 | Assumptions/conclusions + data interpretation | About 60 items |
| 3 | Series + a timed mixed set across all types | About 60 items |
Time yourself from week 2: the whole FOE gives you about 70 seconds per item. Log every wrong answer by type so week 3 targets your weakest pattern.
Keep this in proportion: analytical ability is part of a 25% block. Most of your study hours belong to the fire-service areas.
