BFP Exam Verbal Ability Review

The BFP's written exam is the CSC Fire Officer Examination (FOE). Its General Ability part (25% of the exam) covers verbal, analytical and numerical ability. This post covers the verbal side.

What to practice

CSC doesn't publish a breakdown of the FOE's verbal items. The closest public guide is the CSE's Verbal Ability part, which CSC describes as word meaning, sentence completion, error recognition, sentence structure, paragraph organization and reading comprehension — in English and in Filipino. The FOE breakdown isn't published, so a quick Filipino refresher is a cheap hedge.

Grammar and error recognition

  • Subject–verb agreement (especially with "each", "neither", collective nouns)
  • Pronoun reference and case
  • Tense consistency
  • Word choice (affect/effect, fewer/less)
  • Modifier placement

Vocabulary and word meaning

Read one English editorial a day and note five unfamiliar words with their sentence. Learn common roots and prefixes — they unlock words you've never seen.

Sentence completion

Read the whole sentence first, find the clue words (contrast: "but", "although"; cause: "because", "so"), predict the kind of word needed, then check the options.

Paragraph organization and reading comprehension

Short passages with main-idea, inference and vocabulary-in-context questions. For jumbled paragraphs, find the opening sentence (it needs nothing before it) and link the rest by pronouns and transition words.

A 3-week drill plan

WeekFocusVolume
1Grammar, error recognition, vocabularyAbout 60 items
2Sentence completion, paragraph organization, readingAbout 50 items
3Timed mixed set + review of every errorAbout 50 items

Reading skill pays off beyond this section: the fire-service items are dense with legal and technical wording. Keep verbal practice in proportion, though — most of your hours belong to the fire-service areas.
