BFP Exam Mock Test Strategy: Run Your Own Timed Practice Tests
BFP Exam Mock Test Strategy
The BFP's written exam is the CSC Fire Officer Examination (FOE): 150 scored multiple-choice items (plus a 10-item personal-data questionnaire), 3 hours 5 minutes, pen and paper, passing at a general rating of 80.00. CSC doesn't release past papers or an official practice test, so the best preparation is a practice test you build and time yourself.
Build a 150-item practice test
CSC publishes the weights of each area, not item counts. If you mirror the weights in a 150-item set, you get roughly:
| Area | Weight | Items in your practice set |
|---|---|---|
| General Ability (verbal, analytical, numerical) | 25% | About 38 |
| Fire Suppression | 30% | 45 |
| Fire Safety and Prevention | 20% | 30 |
| Fire Investigation | 15% | About 22 |
| Administrative Matters | 10% | 15 |
Treat this as a practice split, not the official item count. Pull items from your reviewer books, your own questions written from the Fire Code, arson law and RA 6975/9263/9592, and practice quizzes.
Pacing
185 minutes for 150 items (the personal-data questions take a few minutes) works out to about 70 seconds per item. A simple plan:
- First pass: answer everything you know, mark the rest. Aim to finish it in about two hours.
- Second pass: work the marked items.
- Last 10 minutes: make sure every item has an answer and your answer-sheet rows line up.
Use the free mock test timer to run the clock.
When to run each test (8-week plan)
| Week | Test |
|---|---|
| 1 | Full 150-item test — your diagnostic |
| 3 | Half test (75 items) on your two weakest areas |
| 5 | Full test |
| 7 | Half test on whatever is still weakest |
| 8 | Full test under exam conditions: morning start, pencil, no phone |
Review matters more than the score
After each test, sort every wrong answer into one of three bins: didn't know the content, misread the item, or ran out of time. "Didn't know" goes back into your study plan; "misread" means slow down on those item types; "ran out of time" means tighten your first pass. Track your percentage per area from test to test — the goal is to clear 80 across the whole paper.
