SHS Strand vs College Course: Does Your Strand Limit You?
SHS Strand vs College Course: Does Your Strand Limit You?
SHS strand is meant to align with intended college path. But the alignment isn't perfect, and strand doesn't fully lock you out of other paths.
The strands
Academic Track
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
- ABM (Accountancy, Business, Management)
- HUMSS (Humanities + Social Sciences)
- GAS (General Academic Strand)
TVL (Technical-Vocational-Livelihood)
- Multiple specialisations (Cookery, ICT, Industrial Arts, Home Economics, etc.)
Sports + Arts and Design Tracks
- For specialised athletic / artistic tracks
How strand affects admission
Strict alignment (some universities + programmes)
Some programmes require specific strand:
- BS Engineering programmes typically require STEM
- BS Architecture often requires STEM
- BS Computer Science often requires STEM
- Some health sciences require STEM
Flexible alignment (most programmes)
Most universities accept any strand for most programmes. Examples:
- BS Business administration: any strand acceptable
- AB programmes (Communication, Pol Sci, etc.): any strand
- BS Education: any strand (with subject-specific majors)
- Most non-STEM programmes: open
What CETs require
| CET | Strand requirement |
|---|---|
| UPCAT | All strands eligible |
| ACET | All strands eligible |
| DLSUCET | All strands eligible |
| USTET | All strands eligible |
| PUPCET | All strands eligible |
| DOST-SEI | STEM strand strongly preferred (essentially required for most programmes) |
CET prep by strand
STEM strand
Best-prepared for:
- DOST-SEI
- UPCAT (Math + Science sections)
- USTET (Mental Aptitude + Math + Science)
- DLSUCET (all sections)
Slightly disadvantaged for:
- Filipino-heavy verbal sections (less consistent Filipino practice in some STEM schools)
ABM strand
Best-prepared for:
- Business-focused universities
- ACET (broad academic preparation)
- Accountancy programme admission
Slightly disadvantaged for:
- DOST-SEI (Math is fine; Science depth varies)
- Engineering admission (Science depth varies)
HUMSS strand
Best-prepared for:
- Liberal arts programmes
- Communications, Political Science, Psychology
- Pre-Law preparation
- ACET RC + essay sections
Significantly disadvantaged for:
- DOST-SEI (Math + Science depth)
- STEM-aligned programmes
- Engineering admission
GAS strand
Most flexible — broad coverage. Often the right choice for students unsure of college path.
Doesn't excel in any specific area but doesn't lock out any path.
TVL strand
Different pathway. TVL graduates typically:
- Pursue technical careers directly with NCII certification
- Or pursue related college programmes (ICT, Hospitality, etc.)
- Some pursue any college programme with extra prep needed for academic CETs
When you can change track
Same strand, different programme
Easy. STEM strand can pursue Engineering OR Sciences OR Math.
Cross-strand admission
Most universities accept any strand for most programmes. Check specific university requirements.
Cross-strand to engineering
Possible but disadvantaged. HUMSS/GAS to BS Engineering = significant Math + Science gap requiring extra prep.
Bridging programmes
Some universities offer bridging courses for off-strand applicants. PUP, MSU, regional state universities are often more accommodating.
Strand mistakes to avoid
- Choosing strand based on what friends choose: not aligned with your interests
- Choosing STEM "to keep options open" if you genuinely dislike STEM: makes SHS years harder + doesn't actually help if you're not pursuing STEM
- Choosing TVL without TVL career intent: closes some academic doors unnecessarily
- Locking in too early: most students don't have firm college plans at Grade 10-11
Recovering from strand mismatch
If you're SHS HUMSS but want Engineering:
- Self-study Math + Physics during SHS (years 11-12)
- Take CETs that don't require STEM strand verification
- Apply to programmes with Foundation/Bridge year
- Consider 1-year preparatory programme + delayed engineering entry
The mismatch isn't fatal but adds 1-2 years.
