Choosing a College After CET Acceptance: Decision Framework

If you've taken multiple CETs (typical Filipino strategy) and been accepted to multiple universities, you face a real decision. Here's the framework.

Decision factors (in priority order)

1. Cost vs family budget

This is often the binding constraint:

University4-year tuition cost (approximate)
UP, PUP, MSU systemFree with TES; modest miscellaneous fees
FEU, UST private₱400,000-₱900,000
ADMU, DLSU₱800,000-₱1,200,000
Mid-tier private₱200,000-₱500,000

If family budget is constrained, RA 10931-funded SUC (UP, PUP, etc.) often wins by default.

2. Programme strength

Different universities are strong in different programmes:

Programme strengthTop universities
Engineering (especially CS)UP, Mapua, MIT-Manila, MSU-IIT, DLSU
AccountancyUST, UP, ADMU, DLSU, USC, FEU
Pre-Med + Health SciencesUP Manila, UST, ADMU, CEU, FEU
Business + Management EngineeringADMU, DLSU, UP, UST
Law preparationUP, ADMU, San Beda
Communications + MediaADMU, UP, DLSU, UST
ArchitectureUST, Mapua, UP, DLSU
EducationPNU, UP, BSU, SLU
Music + ArtsUST, UP
Public Service / PoliticsADMU, UP

If your career interest aligns clearly with one university's strength, that university is the right choice (assuming cost works).

3. Geographic preference

Universities are spread across PHL:

  • Manila: UP Diliman/Manila, Ateneo, DLSU, UST, FEU, PUP, Mapua, etc.
  • Cebu: USC, USJ-R, UP Cebu, Cebu Institute of Medicine
  • Davao: USEP, Ateneo de Davao
  • Iligan: MSU-IIT
  • Other regional: UP Visayas, UP Baguio, UP Tacloban, UP Mindanao, regional state universities

For students with strong family ties to a region, choosing the local strong university often makes sense.

4. Cultural fit

Different universities have distinct cultures:

  • UP: large, public, intellectually diverse, activist-oriented
  • Ateneo: Jesuit, contemplative, humanities-rich
  • DLSU: La Sallian, business + STEM-oriented, faster-paced
  • UST: Catholic, traditional, large Asian university
  • PUP: state, working-class, practical-oriented
  • MSU-IIT: technical, regional Mindanao identity

Cultural fit matters for 4-year experience. Visit campus + talk to students before deciding.

5. Career trajectory match

Some universities have stronger pipelines into specific careers:

  • Big 4 audit: UST, ADMU, DLSU, UP
  • Investment banking + consulting: ADMU (especially Management Engineering), DLSU
  • Government + diplomacy: ADMU, UP (especially Pol Sci, IR)
  • Tech companies: DLSU CS, UP CS, MSU-IIT CS
  • Healthcare: UP Manila, UST, CEU (especially health sciences)
  • Engineering MNC: Mapua, MIT-Manila, MSU-IIT, UP

If your specific target employer is known, check where their graduates concentrate.

Decision matrix template

Score each university (1-10) on:

  • Cost match (10 = perfect for budget)
  • Programme strength (10 = top in your field)
  • Geographic preference (10 = ideal location)
  • Cultural fit (10 = aligns with you)
  • Career match (10 = direct pipeline to target)

Sum the scores. Highest = decision (with sense check).

When a "lower-tier" school is the right choice

Common scenarios:

  • Cost makes "top tier" unsustainable for family
  • Specific programme strong at non-elite school
  • Geographic + family commitment to home region
  • You're confident in your individual performance regardless of school name

Don't choose based on school name alone if other factors push elsewhere.

When tier matters most

Some career paths weight school name heavily:

  • Investment banking + management consulting (ADMU + DLSU heavily preferred)
  • Selective government programmes (UP heavily represented)
  • International graduate school applications
  • Specific MNC fast-track programmes

In these scenarios, attending elite school may be worth additional cost.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing solely on prestige without considering cost
  • Choosing solely on cost without considering programme strength
  • Following peer pressure ("everyone goes to ADMU")
  • Ignoring cultural fit (campus tour + talking to current students helps)
  • Not considering exit strategies (transfer options, dual degree)
