Is a PUP Degree Worth It? How to Judge the Value

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines is a state university with a main campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila and branch campuses elsewhere. For many families, getting into PUP is life-changing — mainly because of cost.

We won't quote salary averages, placement lists or board-exam pass rates here — PUP doesn't publish them in a form we can check. Here's how to judge the value yourself.

1. The cost advantage is real

Under RA 10931, the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, eligible Filipino students at state universities such as PUP don't pay tuition. Compared with a private university, that can mean several hundred thousand pesos saved over four years.

What you still pay for: books and materials, transport, food, and housing if you move for school. Budget for those honestly.

2. Start with the programme

Look at the programme you'd enter at the specific campus you'd attend:

• Curriculum and facilities
• Internship and practicum arrangements
• Where recent graduates work — ask the department or alumni
• For board-exam courses, the school's results in official PRC releases

3. Remember you can apply to only one campus

PUP allows one application, to one campus, per academic year. Choose the campus that offers your programme and fits your daily life — see the PUPCET cutoff guide.

4. Outcomes depend on you too

Employers look at skills, internships, grades and how you present yourself as much as the school name. Students who join organisations, take internships and build relationships with teachers get more out of any university.

5. Questions to ask before you commit

• Does this programme at this campus lead where I want to go?
• What will the non-tuition costs be for four years?
• How does this offer compare with my other options, programme for programme?
