PUPCET Math Review: Topics That Show Up in the Free CET

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines College Entrance Test (PUPCET) is the largest free college entrance exam in the country. About 80,000+ Senior High School graduates apply each cycle, with PUP admitting roughly 20,000-25,000 across the system.

PUPCET Math is one of the four major sub-tests (alongside English, Reading Comprehension, and Science). For STEM-track applicants, PUPCET Math should be a strength; for non-STEM strand applicants, it's the highest-leverage subtest to drill.

This post is the topic-by-topic plan that the PUPCET 2026 pillar guide hands off to.

What PUP actually asks

Approximate item distribution within the Math sub-test (~50 items):

Topic blockApprox. items
Arithmetic operations + percentages8
Algebra (linear, quadratic, word problems)18
Geometry (triangles, circles, area/volume)10
Trigonometry basics5
Statistics + probability5
Number theory4

PUPCET doesn't explicitly publish these proportions, but post-cycle analysis from review centres consistently puts algebra at roughly one-third of math items.

Algebra — the workhorse

Drill list:

  • Linear equations in one and two variables, including word problems
  • Quadratic equations: factoring, quadratic formula
  • Systems of equations (2×2)
  • Exponents and radicals
  • Polynomial operations and factoring
  • Linear inequalities
  • Sequences and series basics
  • Functions: domain, range, basic graph reading

PUPCET word problems typically need one of three setups: a system of two linear equations, a single quadratic, or a rate equation. Pattern recognition matters.

Geometry

Drill list:

  • Triangle properties: angle sums, congruence, similarity, special right triangles (30-60-90, 45-45-90)
  • Circle theorems: area, circumference, arc length, sector area
  • Polygon properties: interior/exterior angle sums
  • Coordinate geometry: distance, midpoint, slope, line equations
  • Area and volume of common solids (prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, spheres)
  • Pythagorean theorem applications

The 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 ratios appear nearly every cycle.

Trigonometry

PUPCET trig is mostly right-triangle ratios:

  • SOH-CAH-TOA on right triangles
  • Unit circle values for 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°
  • Sine and cosine of complementary angles
  • Pythagorean identity
  • Angle of elevation/depression word problems

Skip the deep identities (sum-to-product, double-angle). They almost never appear.

Statistics + probability

  • Mean, median, mode, range
  • Reading bar charts, line graphs, pie charts
  • Basic probability (single event)
  • Basic counting (factorials, simple permutations)

Number theory

  • Divisibility rules
  • Prime factorisation
  • GCD, LCM
  • Percentages: increase/decrease, reverse percentage
  • Ratios and proportions
