PUPCET English and Reading Comprehension Review

PUPCET combines English language and Reading Comprehension into a single sub-test of approximately 50 items. The skill base — academic English fluency plus RC speed — rewards consistent reading habits over flashcard memorisation.

This post is the topic-by-topic plan that the PUPCET 2026 pillar guide hands off to.

What PUP actually asks

Approximate item distribution:

Item typeApprox. items
Grammar (correctness, usage)18
Vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, contextual)12
Reading comprehension (3-4 short passages)18
Spelling and idiomatic usage2

Grammar

Drill list:

  • Subject-verb agreement, including with intervening phrases
  • Pronoun reference and pronoun-antecedent agreement
  • Tense consistency
  • Active vs passive voice
  • Misplaced and dangling modifiers
  • Comma splice and run-on sentence identification
  • Word choice: affect/effect, fewer/less, who/whom, between/among
  • Apostrophe usage
  • Capitalisation rules
  • Parallel structure in lists

PUPCET grammar items often present a sentence with multiple potential errors and ask which is the correctly-formed version.

Vocabulary

PUPCET vocabulary tests at solid SHS academic level. The most efficient daily habit:

  • One English editorial per day from a major Philippine paper (Inquirer, BusinessWorld, Philippine Star)

Twelve weeks of this builds vocabulary that flashcard decks can't match. PUPCET vocabulary items use words in context, so you need to recognise them in real sentences.

Supplemental focus: most common 200 academic English words.

Reading Comprehension

PUPCET RC passages are typically 200-500 words each, with 4-6 questions per passage. Question types:

  • Main idea / central claim
  • Inference (what's implied but not stated)
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Detail recall (with at least one near-correct distractor)
  • Author's tone or purpose

Two reading habits that move scores fastest:

  1. Read questions before passages. Cuts re-read time on detail items.
  2. Annotate as you read. Underline topic sentences and circle transition words ("however," "in contrast," "consequently").
