PUPCET Abstract Reasoning: Pattern Recognition Sub-Test

PUPCET's Abstract Reasoning is the sub-test where SHS strand matters least. The 50 items reward pattern recognition, not subject knowledge. A HUMSS, GAS, or STEM candidate all have equal access to the score with equivalent practice.

This post is the topic-by-topic plan that the PUPCET 2026 pillar guide hands off to.

What PUP actually asks

Approximate item distribution:

Item typeApprox. share
Figure analogies22%
Number series18%
Letter series12%
Figure series18%
Classification (odd one out)12%
Spatial reasoning10%
Logical syllogisms8%

Figure analogies

Identify the visual transformation from A to B, then apply to C. Common transformations:

  • Rotation (90°, 180°, 270°)
  • Reflection (horizontal, vertical)
  • Element addition or removal
  • Colour/shading change
  • Combination of two transformations

Practise scanning for the dominant change first.

Number series

Compute differences between consecutive terms. Common patterns:

  • Arithmetic (constant difference): 3, 7, 11, 15, ___
  • Geometric (constant ratio): 2, 6, 18, 54, ___
  • Differences-of-differences
  • Alternating two patterns
  • Square / cube progression
  • Fibonacci-like
  • Multi-step (×2 +1, ×2 +1, ...)

Letter series

Convert letters to alphabet positions (A=1, B=2, ...). Find the pattern in positions, then convert back.

Memorise positions A-N. Compute O-Z from N=14.

Figure series

4-5 figures in sequence; pick the next. Trace one element through the sequence at a time:

  • Element addition/removal each step
  • Rotation of central element
  • Mirror flip alternation
  • Colour/shading rotation

Classification (odd one out)

Find the most specific shared category. PUPCET items tend toward broader category mismatches. Figure-based classification appears more often than word-based.

Spatial reasoning

  • 3D paper folding (2D net to 3D shape)
  • Mirror image identification
  • Rotation in 3D
  • Pattern stacking and counting
  • Cross-sections

Practice with physical objects when possible. Folding actual paper builds intuition that 2D drilling alone doesn't.

Logical syllogisms

  • "All A are B" / "Some A are B" / "No A are B"
  • "If P then Q" conditionals
  • Contrapositive (valid)
  • Inverse, Converse (invalid — common traps)

Venn diagrams solve most syllogism items in under 30 seconds.

Pacing on test day

Item time-to-solve:

  • Figure analogies: 25-35 sec
  • Number/letter series: 30-45 sec
  • Figure series: 30-50 sec
  • Classification: 15-25 sec
  • Spatial: 60-90 sec
  • Syllogisms: 40-60 sec

Bank time on fast items, spend on spatial/syllogisms.
