PUPCET Abstract Reasoning Review: Patterns and Logic
PUP doesn't publish the PUPCET's subtests, but reviewer sites consistently report an abstract reasoning section. It's the area where your senior high strand matters least — HUMSS, ABM, GAS and STEM students all start roughly equal, and practice closes the gap.
This is the plan that the PUPCET pillar guide hands off to. Item counts and "share per type" figures online aren't official; the pattern types below are the common ones.
Figure analogies
Find the change from A to B, then apply it to C: rotation (90°, 180°, 270°), reflection, adding or removing elements, shading changes, or two changes at once. Look for the biggest change first.
Number series
- Arithmetic: 3, 7, 11, 15, …
- Geometric: 2, 6, 18, 54, …
- Differences of differences
- Two alternating patterns
- Squares and cubes
- Fibonacci-like sequences
- Multi-step rules (×2 then +1, …)
Letter series
Convert letters to positions (A=1 … Z=26), find the numeric pattern, then convert back.
Figure series
Follow one element at a time through the sequence — additions, rotations, flips, shading.
Classification (odd one out)
Find the most specific category all but one share.
Spatial reasoning
- Folding a 2D net into a 3D shape
- Mirror images
- 3D rotation
- Counting stacked blocks
- Cross-sections
Folding real paper builds intuition faster than drawings alone.
Syllogisms and logic
- "All A are B", "Some A are B", "No A are B" — use Venn diagrams.
- Conditionals: the contrapositive is valid; the converse and inverse are common traps.
