SHS STEM Strand Guide: Programmes + College Pathway
SHS STEM Strand Guide: Programmes + College Pathway
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) strand commits to STEM-aligned college programmes. Best fit for Engineering, Pre-Med, Computer Science, and STEM scholarships.
What STEM strand covers
Heavy curriculum in:
- Pre-Calculus, Basic Calculus, Statistics + Probability
- Earth + Life Sciences, General Biology, Chemistry, Physics
- General Chemistry 1 + 2
- Research projects in STEM area
Less of:
- Filipino + Humanities depth
- Business + management subjects
- General education breadth
Programmes STEM strand opens (preferred)
Engineering
- BS Civil Engineering
- BS Mechanical Engineering
- BS Electrical Engineering
- BS Electronics Engineering
- BS Chemical Engineering
- BS Industrial Engineering
- BS Computer Engineering
- BS Aerospace Engineering
Health Sciences
- BS Nursing (some universities)
- BS Pharmacy (preferred)
- BS Medical Technology (preferred)
- Pre-Med tracks (BS Bio, BS Psych, BS Med Tech)
Computer Science + IT
- BS Computer Science
- BS Information Technology
- BS Information Systems
Pure Sciences
- BS Biology
- BS Chemistry
- BS Physics
- BS Mathematics
- BS Statistics
- BS Geology
- BS Marine Biology
- BS Environmental Science
Architecture (some universities)
- BS Architecture (often requires STEM)
DOST-SEI scholarship
STEM strand essentially required for DOST-SEI eligibility. Worth applying.
Value: ₱400,000-₱800,000 across 4 years. Among the highest-leverage applications STEM students can make.
CET prep advantages
STEM strand prepares well for:
- UPCAT (Math + Science emphasis)
- DOST-SEI (heavy STEM)
- USTET Science section
- DLSUCET Math + Science
- ACET Math
- PUPCET Math + Science
CET prep gaps
STEM strand may need extra prep for:
- Filipino sections (less consistent Filipino exposure in some STEM curricula)
- Heavy verbal reasoning (depending on SHS school)
When STEM is the right choice
- You're confident in Math + Science
- You want Engineering, Pre-Med, CS, or pure sciences
- DOST-SEI scholarship is realistic (academic + financial fit)
- You're willing to commit early to STEM-aligned college
When STEM might not fit
- You struggle with Math + Science
- Your career interest is in business, humanities, or arts
- You want to keep all options open (GAS better)
- Your school's STEM programme is weak
Strategic prep for STEM students
CET portfolio
Take all major CETs:
- UPCAT (free)
- DOST-SEI (free, time-limited application window)
- ACET, DLSUCET, USTET, PUPCET, FEUCAT (~₱600 each)
- MSU-SASE (free, especially for Mindanao students)
DOST-SEI priority
Apply DOST-SEI even if uncertain. Application is free. The 60-day prep is real but achievable.
Math + Science consistency
Maintain Math + Science fluency. Don't let Pre-Calculus understanding atrophy.
Don't neglect English + Filipino
Despite STEM focus, CETs include verbal sections. Daily reading habit (one English editorial) helps.
Standard pathway
- SHS STEM strand → Grade 11-12 (2 years)
- Take UPCAT, DOST-SEI, other CETs (Year 12)
- Receive offers (March-May after Year 12)
- Choose university + programme
- BS Engineering / Pre-Med / CS (4-5 years)
- Optional: Master's, MD pathway, etc.
Realistic outcomes
STEM students with consistent grades + CET prep:
- ~70% admitted to first-choice programme at non-tier-1 universities
- ~30-50% admitted to first-choice at tier-1 (UP, Ateneo, DLSU)
- Strong DOST-SEI eligibility for income-qualifying students
