Filipino CPA Overseas Pathways: US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Middle East

Filipino CPAs work abroad in audit firms, corporate finance and shared-service centers. Each country has its own credential rules, and pay varies widely by country, employer, city and role. Check the official body for each route below and compare real job offers before you decide. For overseas jobs, use only recruitment agencies licensed by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

United States

• Route: pass the Uniform CPA Examination, get licensed by a state board of accountancy, then find an employer who can sponsor a work visa (such as H-1B) or an immigrant visa
• The exam: since 2024 it has three core sections (Auditing, Financial Accounting and Reporting, Regulation) plus one discipline section of your choice
• Education and experience: each state sets its own rules, and many foreign-educated candidates need extra credit units to qualify. Get your degree evaluated before you spend on review
• Where to check: NASBA and the board of accountancy of the state you're targeting

Canada

• Route: a credential assessment by the provincial CPA body, then any courses or exams it requires (often parts of the CPA Professional Education Program), then a work permit or permanent residence
• Where to check: CPA Canada and the CPA body of your province

Australia

• Route: a skills assessment by one of the accounting assessing bodies (CPA Australia, CA ANZ or IPA) for skilled migration, or employer sponsorship
• English: an English test is usually part of the visa and assessment rules; check the score each one needs
• Where to check: the assessing body's website and the Department of Home Affairs

United Kingdom

• Route: add a UK-recognized qualification such as ACCA or CIMA, then get a job offer and a Skilled Worker visa
• ACCA exemptions: ACCA may exempt you from some papers based on your degree and CPA license; its exemptions calculator shows exactly which
• Where to check: ACCA and GOV.UK

Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar)

• Route: a job offer, document authentication, then an employment visa
• Packages: often include housing or a housing allowance, transport and medical cover; read the contract
• Local accreditation: some roles need local professional accreditation (in Saudi Arabia, check SOCPA's rules)

For many Filipino CPAs, the Gulf is the first overseas move, since many corporate accounting roles there don't need a new licensing exam.

Singapore and Hong Kong

• Singapore: a job offer and a work pass; membership of ISCA (the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants) for roles that require it
• Hong Kong: a job offer and a work visa; registration with the HKICPA for regulated audit work

A common path

1. A few years of audit in a Philippine firm, often a Big 4 affiliate
2. A move into industry, in the Philippines or the Gulf
3. For some, a longer-term move to the US, Canada, Australia or the UK, with a local credential
4. Permanent residence abroad for a few

US CPA or ACCA?

The US CPA is widely recognized but has state-by-state education and experience rules. ACCA is UK-based and recognized in many countries, and its exemptions can shorten the route. Pick the one that matches the country you actually want to work in.

How CPALE fits

Every route above is easier with a Philippine CPA license and audit experience. The CPALE is a three-day, paper-based exam of six subjects (FAR, AFAR, Management Services, Auditing, Taxation and RFBT). You pass with a 75% general average and no subject below 65%.
