Two main career tracks
Marine Transportation (Deck Officers)

Education + licensing pathway
Stage 1: BSMT or BSMarE (3.5-4 years)
PHL maritime universities:
- John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU)
- Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP)
- Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) — government, free
- Other CHED-recognised maritime schools
Cost: ₱40,000-₱150,000/year private; PMMA free.
Stage 2: Cadetship (1 year)
Required practical training onboard ship before licensing.
Stage 3: Licensing exam
- MARINA (Maritime Industry Authority) administered
- For Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) for deck officers
- For Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW) for engine officers
