For the LET Professional Education cluster, questions on Questioning, Communication, and Instructional Materials are SCENARIO-BASED — you will read a brief classroom situation and answer about what technique or concept is illustrated. Your strategy: (1) READ the scenario carefully and identify the TEACHER ACTION described. (2) MATCH it to the precise term using these rules: 'Why do you think so?' = PROBING; 'Here's a hint…' = PROMPTING; 'What does Carlos think?' = REDIRECTING; 'pause after question' = WAIT TIME I; 'pause after answer' = WAIT TIME II; 'What if…?' = DIVERGENT; 'one correct answer' = CONVERGENT; 'recall/list/define' = LOW-LEVEL; 'analyze/evaluate/create' = HIGH-LEVEL. (3) For instructional materials, always check ALIGNMENT WITH OBJECTIVE first. (4) For Dale's Cone: CONCRETE = BASE, ABSTRACT = TIP, NO PERCENTAGES. (5) When choosing the BEST teacher action for a wrong answer: always select the option that GUIDES the learner WITH DIGNITY — options involving humiliation are always wrong (RA 7610, RA 7836). (6) For communication barriers: Physical = environment; Semantic = language/vocabulary; Physiological = body/health; Psychological = emotion/anxiety. The question has MANY possible answers (divergent), and it requires the learner to predict and evaluate consequences (Bloom's Evaluate/Analyze level), making it also high-level. Note: these are TWO separate dimensions.

Wait Time I is the pause AFTER the question and BEFORE calling on a respondent. Extended wait time (3–5 seconds) allows all learners — including slower processors — to formulate a meaningful answer, increasing both quality and inclusivity of responses.
Pedro answers a science question partially correctly. Teacher Berna says, 'Good start! Think about the role of chlorophyll we discussed yesterday — does that help you complete your answer?' What technique is this?
The teacher is giving Pedro a HINT (a cue about chlorophyll) to scaffold him toward the complete answer without simply telling him. This is PROMPTING — not probing (which would deepen his existing answer) and not redirecting (which would pass to another student).
After Ana gives her answer, Teacher Jose asks, 'That's interesting, Ana. Why do you think that is the case? Can you give us an example?' What technique is this?
The teacher is pushing Ana to go DEEPER into her own answer — to explain her reasoning and give an example. This is PROBING: it stays with the original respondent and seeks elaboration or justification.
Teacher Linda shows a beautiful, colorful 10-minute video about dinosaurs at the start of her Grade 4 lesson on multiplication. Is this a good instructional choice?
The FIRST and most important criterion for selecting an instructional material is ALIGNMENT WITH THE OBJECTIVE. An entertaining video about dinosaurs does not advance multiplication skills and is therefore inappropriate regardless of its quality or interest value.
A LET reviewer states: 'According to Dale's Cone of Experience, people remember only 10% of what they read but 90% of what they do.' Is this statement correct?
Dale's Cone does NOT include retention percentages. The '10%–90%' figures were added LATER by other sources and are NOT part of Dale's original work. Associating any specific percentage with Dale's Cone is incorrect. The Cone only ranks experiences from concrete (base) to abstract (tip).
For a Grade 1 Science lesson on the parts of a plant, which instructional material is MOST appropriate according to Dale's Cone, and why?
Grade 1 learners are young and meeting the concept for the first time. Dale's Cone prescribes starting at the BASE (most concrete). Realia (real objects) provides direct, hands-on, sensory experience — the most concrete level. A labeled diagram or words alone (abstract levels at the Cone's tip) would be inappropriate as a starting point.
Teacher Ryan finishes a learner's sentence for her when she pauses. Teacher Mark answers his own question when no one responds immediately. What bad questioning habits do both display?
Ryan 'finishes the sentence' (deprives the learner of the chance to complete her thought) and Mark 'answers his own question' (a poor questioning habit explicitly flagged in the literature). Both eliminate the thinking opportunity that wait time is designed to create. Good practice is to wait 3–5 seconds and, if necessary, use prompting rather than providing the answer.
Identify the type of communication barrier in each scenario: (a) Learners at the back cannot hear the teacher because of street noise. (b) A Grade 2 learner cannot understand the teacher's Filipino instructions because her mother tongue is Ilocano. (c) A learner is too anxious to answer because the teacher previously humiliated a classmate.
(a) Physical barriers involve environmental interference (noise, poor acoustics, distance). (b) Semantic barriers involve language or vocabulary mismatch — directly related to the MTB-MLE policy where the mother tongue must be used in Grades 1–3. (c) Psychological barriers involve emotional or mental states — anxiety caused by fear of humiliation blocks communication. Humiliating learners also violates RA 7610 (psychological abuse) and the Code of Ethics (RA 7836).
