Midwife Career After the MLE: Where Licensed Midwives Work
Midwife Career After the MLE: Where Licensed Midwives Work
Under RA 7392 (the Philippine Midwifery Act), you need a PRC license to practice as a midwife. Passing the MLE and registering with PRC makes you a registered midwife.
Where licensed midwives work
- Rural health units and barangay health stations: prenatal checkups, facility deliveries, immunization, family planning and community health work.
- Lying-in and birthing clinics: normal deliveries and postpartum and newborn care.
- Hospital delivery rooms and OB wards.
- DOH and LGU posts: maternal and child health programs at the local level.
How government pay works
Government midwife posts are paid by salary grade under the Salary Standardization Law. Each job posting (plantilla item) states its salary grade, and the monthly pay follows from it. Look up any grade with the free government salary grade calculator. Private clinic and hospital pay varies by employer, so compare actual job postings rather than averages you see online.
Working abroad
Your PRC license doesn't transfer automatically. Each country's midwifery regulator sets its own rules on education, English, exams and work experience. Examples include the Nursing and Midwifery Council in the UK and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (through AHPRA). Gulf countries have their own health licensing exams and document checks. Check the regulator's current requirements before you plan, and use only employers or agencies licensed by the Department of Migrant Workers.
Growing in the profession
- Keep your license active with continuing professional development units (RA 10912).
- Take on supervisory roles in health centers and clinics as you gain experience.
- Some midwives later complete a BS Nursing degree and take the NLE for a wider scope of practice. See MLE vs NLE.
