MLE Obstetrics and Infant Care Review: Maternal and Child Care
Maternal and child care runs through two of the five MLE subjects, both on Day 1: Obstetrics (8:00–10:00 a.m.) and Infant Care and Feeding (2:00–4:00 p.m.). Each is a two-hour paper. PRC doesn't publish item counts or weights, and you need at least 50% in every subject on top of a 75% general rating.

Obstetrics
Antenatal care
- Prenatal visit schedule and routine prenatal labs
- Naegele's rule
- Common discomforts of pregnancy
- High-risk pregnancy: identify and refer
- Nutrition in pregnancy and health education
Labor and delivery
- Stages of labor (1–4) and the mechanisms of labor
- Fetal monitoring and partograph reading
- Normal spontaneous delivery
- Operative delivery (forceps, vacuum, CS): know the indications and when to refer
- Episiotomy and perineal repair
- Active management of the third stage
- Immediate newborn care
Postpartum care
- Maternal recovery and lochia (rubra, serosa, alba)
- BUBBLE-HE assessment
- Postpartum complications (hemorrhage, infection, thrombosis)
- Postpartum blues vs depression vs psychosis
Complications and emergencies
- Hyperemesis gravidarum, gestational diabetes
- Preeclampsia and eclampsia (magnesium sulfate)
- Placenta previa vs abruptio placentae
- Ectopic pregnancy, types of abortion, Rh incompatibility
- Cord prolapse (knee-chest position), shoulder dystocia (McRoberts maneuver)
- Postpartum hemorrhage (the 4 Ts), uterine rupture
Infant Care and Feeding
Newborn care
- APGAR scoring
- Essential newborn care (vitamin K, eye prophylaxis, hepatitis B vaccine)
- Newborn vital signs and reflexes (Moro, rooting, sucking)
- Common conditions (jaundice, hypoglycemia)
- Newborn screening
Feeding
- Breastfeeding initiation, positioning and latch
- Exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding
- Common breastfeeding problems
Child health
- Growth and development milestones
- Immunization (the Philippine EPI schedule)
- Common childhood illnesses (respiratory infections, otitis media, diarrhea) and IMCI
Family planning (natural, barrier, hormonal, IUD and permanent methods, counseling) overlaps with the DOH programs, so we cover it in the Primary Health Care review.
