PNPA vs PMA: Which Officer Academy Is Right for You?
The Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) trains officers for the PNP, the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) trains officers for the Army, Navy and Air Force. Both are four-year academies that end in a bachelor's degree and a commission, but the careers are very different.

Both academies require applicants to be natural-born Filipinos and single with no children. Pay figures are 2026 base pay under the uniformed services schedule (EO 107, DBM NBC 600), which the AFP, PNP, BFP and BJMP share.
The entrance exams
- PMA publishes its coverage: math (algebra and geometry), English (grammar, composition, reading and comprehension) and the SPMA abstract-reasoning test (verbal and numerical reasoning, pattern analysis). There's no science or general information subtest.
- PNPA doesn't publish an official subject list. Reviewers commonly describe English and Filipino communication skills, math, general science, logical and abstract reasoning, and general information and current events.
Math, English and reasoning preparation carries over between the two. For PNPA, add general science and current events.
Timing
The two exams run at different times, so you can take both if you're eligible for both. In 2026, PMA tested from July to September, and the PNPACAT is on 25 October. PMA's 2026 results are expected around October 2026.
Which suits you?
PNPA may suit you if you want:
- a career in law enforcement, fire protection or jail management
- work that's centred on communities and public safety at home
PMA may suit you if you want:
- a career in national defence in the Army, Navy or Air Force
- the prospect of assignments wherever the AFP is needed
Both involve four years of residential training with strict discipline and demanding physical standards, so be sure the life suits you before you commit.
