Cadet life similarity
Both academies have similar 4-year cadet programmes:
- Daily PT, classroom, tactical training
- Strict military-style discipline
- Plebe → 3rd → 2nd → 1st class progression
- Honor Code
- Bachelor of Science degree
- Guaranteed officer commission
Mission and lifestyle differences
PNPA → PNP
- Domestic law enforcement
- Daily community + criminal interaction
- Posting typically in PHL urban or community settings
- Closer to family generally
- More predictable schedules in non-special units
PMA → AFP
- National defence + external security focus
- Counter-insurgency operations
- Frequent deployment to remote/conflict areas
- Long deployments away from family
- Specialised technical career paths (engineers, signal, special ops)
Salary comparison
Both follow the MUP Base Pay Schedule (EO 107, s. 2025), not the civilian SSL. 2026 base pay at equivalent ranks:
- Entry commission: PNPA grad (Police Lieutenant) ₱52,004/month vs PMA grad (Second Lieutenant) ₱46,020/month
- Both Colonel: ₱84,612/month base
- Both General: ₱157,274/month base
PNP entry-level is slightly higher because PNPA graduates commission directly as Police Lieutenant — one rank above the AFP's Second Lieutenant entry.
Career advancement
Similar trajectories at both. PNPA + PMA alumni dominate senior leadership of their respective services.
