PNPA Admission Test Verbal Review: Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading

PNPA doesn't publish an official subject list for the PNPA Cadet Admission Test. Reviewers commonly describe a communication skills component covering English and Filipino. Good language skills also matter throughout the academy and in an officer's daily work — reports, briefings and dealing with the public.

Grammar

  • Subject–verb agreement — long subjects, "each", "either/neither", collective nouns
  • Pronouns — clear reference and correct case
  • Verb tenses and consistency
  • Modifiers — misplaced and dangling
  • Parallel structure
  • Commonly confused words — affect/effect, its/it's, than/then

For "spot the error" items, read the whole sentence, then test each part against one rule at a time.

Vocabulary

  • Synonyms and antonyms
  • Meaning from context
  • Word roots, prefixes and suffixes

Build vocabulary through daily reading and a notebook of new words, reviewed weekly.

Sentence completion and improvement

  • Completion: find the clue words ("although", "because", "therefore") and predict the kind of word needed before reading the options.
  • Improvement: choose the version that's correct, clear and concise.

Reading comprehension

  • Main idea, details, inference, vocabulary in context, and the author's purpose
  • Skim the questions first, then read actively and go back to the text for every answer

Filipino

Since reviewers mention Filipino as well as English, refresh the basics: correct use of ng and nang, din/rin and daw/raw, common salawikain and idyoma, and reading comprehension in Filipino.

A three-week plan

WeekFocus
1English grammar and error spotting; Filipino usage basics
2Vocabulary, sentence completion and improvement
3Reading passages in English and Filipino; timed mixed sets

Read one news article a day throughout — it also prepares you for current events.
