PMA Cadet Life: 4-Year Programme Overview

PMA cadet life is among the most rigorous programmes in PHL — combining military training, academic rigour, leadership development, and physical conditioning across 4 years.

PMA at a glance

  • Location: Fort del Pilar, Baguio City
  • Programme length: 4 years
  • Annual cadet intake: ~250-300
  • Annual applicants: ~5,000-7,000
  • Acceptance rate: ~4-6%
  • Graduation: Bachelor of Science degree + Police Lieutenant / Navy Ensign / Air Force 2nd Lieutenant commission

Cadet rank progression

  • 4th Class (Plebe): First year — most rigorous adjustment
  • 3rd Class: Second year — basic skills consolidation
  • 2nd Class: Third year — increasing leadership responsibility
  • 1st Class: Fourth year — Cadet Officer, leadership of underclass cadets

Daily schedule

Standard plebe daily routine:

  • 0530: Reveille
  • 0530-0600: Morning physical training (PT)
  • 0600-0700: Personal hygiene + breakfast
  • 0700-1200: Academic classes
  • 1200-1300: Lunch
  • 1300-1700: Tactical training, classes, sports
  • 1700-1900: Free time, study hall
  • 1900-2000: Dinner
  • 2000-2200: Study hour
  • 2200: Lights out

Weekend leave permitted in upperclass years; restricted for plebes.

Academic curriculum

PMA cadets complete a Bachelor of Science degree across 4 years:

  • General education courses (PHL standard CHED requirements)
  • Military science core
  • Physical sciences (math, physics, chemistry)
  • Engineering subjects
  • Humanities + social sciences
  • Specialty tracks: Engineering, Law, Sciences, Humanities

Tactical + military training

  • Weapons familiarisation + qualification
  • Field exercises
  • Drill + ceremony
  • Cadet leadership (squad → platoon → company → battalion)
  • Inter-service exposure (Army, Navy, Air Force)
  • Junior summer training (overseas + local)

Physical training

  • Daily morning PT
  • Sports + intramurals
  • Special unit training (combat sports, marksmanship)
  • Annual physical fitness test
  • Cadet must maintain combat readiness

Honor Code

PMA Honor Code: "We do not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate among us those who do."

Honor violations result in Honor Court proceedings + potential dismissal.

Plebe year (most rigorous)

  • "Beast Barracks" reception of new cadets (intensive 6-week orientation)
  • Academic pressure begins immediately
  • Strict discipline + uniform standards
  • Limited family contact
  • High dropout/leave rate (5-15% per year typically)

Upperclass years

  • Increasing autonomy + leadership responsibility
  • Specialisation in chosen branch (Army, Navy, Air Force)
  • Senior thesis/project
  • Spring break + summer leave
  • Final year: cadet officer roles

Commissioning + post-PMA

Upon graduation:

  • Commission as 2nd Lieutenant (Army), Navy Ensign, or Air Force 2nd Lieutenant
  • Branch assignment based on academic performance + preference
  • Initial assignment to operating unit

  • Strong physical limitations
  • Discomfort with strict military discipline
  • Family obligations preventing 4-year residential commitment
  • Specific civilian career interests
