NAPOLCOM PNPE Verbal Ability (Verbal Reasoning) Review

Verbal Reasoning is one of the four areas of the NAPOLCOM PNP Entrance Exam. NAPOLCOM lists three parts:

  1. Vocabulary — synonyms and antonyms
  2. Comprehension — paragraph organization and reading comprehension
  3. Grammar — correct usage

NAPOLCOM doesn't publish how many items this area has, so give all three parts regular practice.

This post is the topic plan behind the NAPOLCOM PNPE guide.

Vocabulary: synonyms and antonyms

The most efficient habit is daily reading:

  • Read one English editorial a day.
  • Write down unfamiliar words with their meaning and one example sentence.
  • Review the list every few days. After a few weeks you'll recognize far more words.

When you don't know a word, use prefixes and roots (mal-, bene-, -cide, -phobia) and the tone of the word (positive or negative) to narrow the options.

Paragraph organization

You're given scrambled sentences and asked for the best order:

  • Find the sentence that introduces the topic. It usually doesn't start with a pronoun or a connector like however.
  • Follow the connectors (first, then, as a result, however) and pronouns back to what they refer to.
  • Look for the sentence that clearly concludes the idea.

Reading comprehension

Short passages with questions on:

  • Main idea
  • Inference
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Details

Skim the questions before reading the passage, then answer from what the passage says, not from what you already know.

Grammar: correct usage

  • Subject-verb agreement
  • Pronoun reference and case
  • Tense consistency
  • Modifier placement
  • Commonly confused words (affect/effect, fewer/less, its/it's)
  • Prepositions and idiomatic expressions
