NAPOLCOM PNPE Logical Reasoning Review

Logical Reasoning is one of the four areas of the NAPOLCOM PNP Entrance Exam. NAPOLCOM describes it in two parts: verbal and non-verbal reasoning. It doesn't publish how many items there are, so prepare both parts. Background matters less here than practice.

Verbal reasoning

Syllogisms

Drill the basic forms:

• "All A are B", "Some A are B", "No A are B"
• Draw a quick Venn diagram. It settles most syllogisms fast.
• Check whether the conclusion must follow, not whether it's merely possible or true in real life.

Conditional statements

• "If P, then Q." The contrapositive (if not Q, then not P) is valid.
• The converse (if Q, then P) and the inverse (if not P, then not Q) are the classic traps.

Analogies and classification

• Name the relationship in the first pair (part to whole, cause and effect, tool and user, degree) before you look at the options.
• In "odd one out" items, look for the most specific shared category.

Statements and conclusions

A short set of facts, then a conclusion to judge. Use only what's stated. Don't bring in outside knowledge, and watch for conclusions that go further than the facts.

Non-verbal reasoning

Figure series, matrices and "which figure comes next" items. Track one feature at a time:

• Shape and number of elements
• Shading or color
• Rotation (how many degrees, which direction)
• Position (moving clockwise, corner to corner)

Once you've found the rule for one feature, check it against every figure in the series before choosing.

Letter and number patterns

Letter series often appear in reviewer sets for this area. Convert letters to alphabet positions (A = 1, B = 2 … Z = 26) and look for the pattern in the numbers. Number series are listed by NAPOLCOM under Quantitative Reasoning; see the Quantitative review.
