NAPOLCOM PNPE Numerical (Quantitative Reasoning) Review

NAPOLCOM calls the math area of the PNP Entrance Exam Quantitative Reasoning. It's one of four areas, and NAPOLCOM lists its scope as percentage, fractions, number series, and problem solving including bar-graph interpretation. NAPOLCOM doesn't publish how many items it has.

This post is the topic plan behind the NAPOLCOM PNPE guide.

Percentage

  • Percentage of a number; percentage increase and decrease
  • Finding the original amount after a change (reverse percentage)
  • Successive percentages: a 10% increase then a 10% decrease is not zero change
  • Discounts, simple interest and commissions

Fractions

  • All four operations with fractions and mixed numbers
  • Converting between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Comparing and ordering fractions
  • Ratio and proportion, which build on the same skills

Number series

Find the rule by looking at the differences between terms:

  • Constant difference or constant ratio
  • Differences of differences
  • Two patterns alternating
  • Squares, cubes and step patterns (×2 + 1, and so on)

Check each difference twice. One subtraction slip gives you the wrong rule.

Problem solving

Recognize the common types:

  • Age problems
  • Work-rate problems
  • Distance-rate-time
  • Mixture and money problems

Read the whole problem, write down what's being asked, set up the equation, solve, then check your answer against the question.

Bar-graph interpretation

  • Read the title, axis labels and units first.
  • Practice pulling one exact value quickly, then comparisons (difference, ratio, percentage change between two bars).
  • Watch for scales that don't start at zero.

A 3-week Quantitative drilling plan

1Percentages + fractions80 items
2Word problems + number series80 items
3Bar graphs + one full practice test1 practice test + 40 items

Practice by hand from day one. A short set every day beats one long weekend session.
