Latin Honors are GPA-based academic recognition awarded at PHL university graduation:
Cum Laude ("with praise"):
- Typical GWA: 1.45-1.75
- Awarded to ~5-10% of graduating class
Magna Cum Laude ("with great praise"):
- Typical GWA: 1.20-1.45
- Awarded to ~2-5% of graduating class
Summa Cum Laude ("with highest praise"):
- Typical GWA: below 1.20 (extremely rare)
- Awarded to top of class only
Note: PHL grading uses 1.0-5.0 scale where 1.0 is highest. Some private universities use 4.0 scale where higher is better — flip the inequality.
What it means for you:
- Significant for fresh graduate hiring (especially Big 4, MNC)
- Carries lifetime credential value
- Different universities have different exact thresholds
- Plan from Year 1 — late surge can't recover early low grades
- Don't sacrifice mental health chasing it
