Scoring & Grading

Cum Laude / Latin Honors

Latin honors awarded at PHL university graduation based on GWA — Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude.

Latin Honors are GPA-based academic recognition awarded at PHL university graduation:

Cum Laude ("with praise"):

  • Typical GWA: 1.45-1.75
  • Awarded to ~5-10% of graduating class

Magna Cum Laude ("with great praise"):

  • Typical GWA: 1.20-1.45
  • Awarded to ~2-5% of graduating class

Summa Cum Laude ("with highest praise"):

  • Typical GWA: below 1.20 (extremely rare)
  • Awarded to top of class only

Note: PHL grading uses 1.0-5.0 scale where 1.0 is highest. Some private universities use 4.0 scale where higher is better — flip the inequality.

What it means for you:

  • Significant for fresh graduate hiring (especially Big 4, MNC)
  • Carries lifetime credential value
  • Different universities have different exact thresholds
  • Plan from Year 1 — late surge can't recover early low grades
  • Don't sacrifice mental health chasing it
