A topnotcher is a Filipino board exam passer who ranks in the top 10 nationwide for their licensure exam. PRC publishes the top 10 list with each exam result release.
Why it matters:
- Significant career advantage (especially for fresh grads)
- Major employer brand value (Big 4, MNCs, government high-track)
- Faster promotion at start of career
- Often included in employment marketing
- Family + community pride
- Some scholarships explicitly recognise topnotchers
Common topnotcher origin patterns:
- Strong undergraduate university (UP, Ateneo, DLSU, USC)
- Strong review centre programme (often combined with university)
- 4-6 month dedicated review period
- Mock test discipline + diagnostic-driven prep
What it means for you:
- Don't aim FOR topnotcher — aim for solid passing first
- If you're capable + motivated, topnotcher is achievable through disciplined prep
- Topnotcher status alone doesn't guarantee long-term career success
- Many highly successful PHL professionals are NOT topnotchers
