PNPA Admission Test Logical and Abstract Reasoning Review
PNPA doesn't publish an official subject list for the PNPA Cadet Admission Test, but reviewers consistently describe logical and abstract reasoning questions. These reward practice more than prior knowledge: once you've seen a pattern type many times, you'll recognise it in seconds.
Number and letter series
- Look at the differences between terms first; if they aren't constant, try the differences of the differences, then ratios
- Watch for alternating series (two patterns interleaved), squares and cubes, and "×2 + 1"-style steps
- For letter series, convert letters to positions (A = 1 … Z = 26) and look for the number pattern
Analogies
- Word analogies: state the relationship in a sentence ("a thermometer measures temperature"), then test each option with the same sentence
- Figure analogies: find what changed from the first figure to the second (rotation, reflection, shading, adding or removing parts), then apply it to the third
Figure series and classification
- Track one element at a time through a series — position, rotation, shading, number of parts
- For "odd one out", find the most specific feature that all but one share
Logical reasoning
- Syllogisms: "all", "some", "no" statements — draw quick diagrams to test the conclusion
- Conditionals: if "If P, then Q" is true, then "If not Q, then not P" is also true; "If Q, then P" and "If not P, then not Q" don't follow
- Arrangement puzzles: list the facts, draw a grid or line, and fill in what's certain first
Spatial items
- Paper folding and hole punching — practise with real paper
- Mirror images and rotations
- Counting blocks or faces in 3D figures
