BJMP Exam Verbal Ability Review
BJMP Exam Verbal Ability Review
The BJMP's written exam is the CSC Penology Officer Examination (POE). Its General Ability part is half the exam and covers verbal, analytical and numerical ability. This post covers the verbal side.
What to practice
CSC doesn't publish a breakdown of the POE's verbal items. The closest public guide is the CSE's Verbal Ability part, which CSC describes as word meaning, sentence completion, error recognition, sentence structure, paragraph organization and reading comprehension — in English and in Filipino. The POE breakdown isn't published, so a quick Filipino refresher is a cheap hedge.
Grammar and error recognition
- Subject–verb agreement (especially with "each", "neither", collective nouns)
- Pronoun reference and case
- Tense consistency
- Word choice (affect/effect, fewer/less)
- Modifier placement
Vocabulary and word meaning
Read one English editorial a day and note five unfamiliar words with their sentence. Learn common roots and prefixes — they unlock words you've never seen.
Sentence completion
Read the whole sentence first, find the clue words (contrast: "but", "although"; cause: "because", "so"), predict the kind of word needed, then check the options.
Paragraph organization and reading comprehension
Short passages with main-idea, inference and vocabulary-in-context questions. For jumbled paragraphs, find the opening sentence (it needs nothing before it) and link the rest by pronouns and transition words.
A 3-week drill plan
| Week | Focus | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Grammar, error recognition, vocabulary | About 60 items |
| 2 | Sentence completion, paragraph organization, reading | About 50 items |
| 3 | Timed mixed set + review of every error | About 50 items |
Reading skill pays off twice: the Mandela Rules and the special laws in the POE's other half are dense, formal English. Pair this plan with the jail management and special laws guide.
