BJMP Exam Numerical Ability Review
BJMP Exam Numerical Ability Review
The BJMP's written exam is the CSC Penology Officer Examination (POE). Its General Ability part is half the exam and covers verbal, analytical and numerical ability. This post covers the numerical side.
What to practice
CSC doesn't publish a breakdown of the POE's numerical items. The closest public guide is the CSE's Numerical Ability part, which CSC describes as basic operations, number sequences and word problems. Practice these:
- Basic operations: fractions, decimals, percentages, order of operations, quick mental arithmetic.
- Percentages, ratios and proportions: percent increase and decrease, splitting an amount in a ratio, direct and inverse proportion.
- Number sequences: differences, alternating patterns, multiplying patterns, squares and cubes.
- Word problems: work, distance–rate–time, mixtures, ages, simple interest.
- Simple equations: one- and two-step linear equations, which make most word problems faster.
Practice without a calculator, and check the CSC exam reminders for what you may bring on exam day.
Three habits that save time
- Estimate first. Rough the answer before computing; it rules out options and catches slips.
- Work from the options. For equation-style word problems, plugging in the choices is often faster than solving.
- Skip and return. The whole POE allows about 70 seconds per item. Mark a slow problem and come back to it.
A 3-week drill plan
| Week | Focus | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Operations, percentages, ratios | About 80 items |
| 2 | Word problems and simple equations | About 80 items |
| 3 | Number sequences + a timed mixed set | About 60 items |
General ability is half the POE, so keep numerical practice going every week alongside the jail management and special laws half.
