AFPSAT Verbal Ability: Vocabulary, Analogies, Completion

Vocabulary (synonyms and antonyms)
The most efficient daily habit:
- Read one English editorial a day from a major Philippine newspaper
- Note every word you can't define, look it up, and write your own sentence with it
Keep it up for the whole review period. Add a list of common academic English words and review it with flashcards.
Sentence completion
Format: a sentence with one or two blanks; pick the option that fits best.
Method:
- Read the whole sentence first
- Find the context clues, especially transition words like however, because and although
- Predict the kind of word that fits before you look at the options
Analogies
Format: WORD A : WORD B :: WORD C : ___
Common relationship types:
- Synonym
- Antonym
- Part to whole
- Cause and effect
- Function (object : action)
- Worker and tool
- General to specific
- Degree (warm : hot)
Match the type of relationship, not just the topic. "Soldier : rifle" is worker and tool, so "carpenter : hammer" fits, while "soldier : army" (part to whole) doesn't.
Reading comprehension
Short passages with one or two questions each. Focus on:
- The main idea
- Inferences (what the passage implies but doesn't say)
- Vocabulary in context
