AFPSAT Verbal Ability: Vocabulary, Analogies, Completion

AFPSAT Verbal Ability is one of five equally-weighted sub-tests at 20% each. The 45 items test vocabulary, sentence completion, and analogies at solid SHS academic English level.

This post is the topic-by-topic plan that the AFPSAT 2026 pillar guide hands off to.

What AFP actually asks

Approximate item distribution within Verbal:

Item typeApprox. items
Vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms)15
Sentence completion12
Analogies10
Reading comprehension (short passages)8

Vocabulary

AFPSAT vocabulary tests at academic SHS level. Most efficient daily habit:

  • One English editorial per day from a major Philippine paper
  • Twelve weeks of this builds vocabulary recognition

Supplemental: most common 200 academic English words.

Sentence completion

Format: a sentence with one or two missing words; pick the option that best fits.

Strategy:

  • Read entire sentence first
  • Identify context clues (transition words: however, because, although)
  • Predict what type of word fits before looking at options

Analogies

Format: WORD A : WORD B :: WORD C : ___

Common relationship types:

  • Synonym
  • Antonym
  • Part-to-whole
  • Cause-and-effect
  • Function (object : action)
  • Object-and-tool
  • General-to-specific
  • Degree

Match the type of relationship, not just topical connection.

Reading comprehension

Short passages (100-200 words) with 1-2 questions each. Focus:

  • Main idea
  • Inference
  • Vocabulary in context
