AFPSAT General Information: PH History, Geography, AFP Knowledge

AFPSAT General Information is the subtest where preparation moves scores most directly. Unlike the other four subtests (which require skill development), General Information is largely memorisation against a finite scope.

This post is the topic-by-topic plan that the AFPSAT 2026 pillar guide hands off to.

What AFP actually asks

Approximate item distribution:

Topic blockApprox. items
Philippine history12
Philippine geography8
1987 Constitution basics6
Current events8
AFP knowledge (structure, ranks, history)7
World geography + history4

Philippine history

Drill list:

  • Pre-colonial: barangay system, baybayin, datus
  • Spanish colonial: Magellan (1521), Legazpi (1565), Galleon trade, encomienda
  • Philippine Revolution: KKK (1892), Pact of Biak-na-Bato (1897), Independence (June 12, 1898)
  • American era: Treaty of Paris (1898), Philippine-American War, Tydings-McDuffie (1934)
  • Commonwealth era (Quezon, Osmeña)
  • WWII and Japanese occupation (1942-1945) — significant AFPSAT focus on AFP-relevant battles
  • Post-independence presidential administrations
  • Martial Law era and EDSA Revolution
  • Post-EDSA reforms

For each era: know the key dates and major figures. AFP-specific history (USAFFE, Bataan Death March, AFP founding, Philippine Scouts) gets disproportionate attention.

Philippine geography

  • Three island groups (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao)
  • Major regions and their key cities
  • Major mountain ranges, rivers, lakes
  • Major bays and gulfs
  • Population centres
  • Strategic geography (sea lanes, AFP-relevant locations)

1987 Constitution basics

Focus on:

  • Article II (Declaration of Principles, especially civilian authority over military)
  • Article III (Bill of Rights)
  • Article XVI (General Provisions on AFP)

AFPSAT items often reference Article XVI provisions on the AFP's role and structure.

Current events

The hardest block to drill specifically. Practical approach:

  • Read one major Philippine news source for 2-3 months before the test
  • Track major military events (West PHL Sea, AFP modernisation)
  • Track major appointments (AFP Chief of Staff, DND Secretary)

AFP knowledge

The AFPSAT-specific block. Drill:

  • AFP structure (Army, Navy, Air Force, plus AFP HQ)
  • Ranks: enlisted (Pvt, Cpl, Sgt, etc.) + officer (2Lt, 1Lt, Capt, Maj, LtCol, Col, BGen, MGen, LtGen, Gen)
  • AFP service academies (PMA Baguio, NDCP, AFPCGSC)
  • AFP missions and roles
  • Major AFP history (founding date, key battles, modernisation programmes)
  • ROTC and reservist programme structure
  • Code of Conduct for AFP personnel

World geography + history

Light coverage. Drill:

  • Continents, major countries
  • World wars at survey level
  • Major international organisations (UN, ASEAN, NATO)
  • Famous historical figures (Lincoln, Churchill, Gandhi, etc.)

The preparation delta is largest on this subtest because the scope is finite.
