AFPSAT Logical Reasoning: Patterns, Syllogisms, Deductive Logic
AFPSAT Logical Reasoning: Patterns, Syllogisms, Deductive Logic
AFPSAT Logical Reasoning is one of two pattern-recognition-heavy subtests (alongside Spatial Ability). Background matters less here; practice matters more.
This post is the topic-by-topic plan that the AFPSAT 2026 pillar guide hands off to.
What AFP actually asks
Approximate item distribution:
| Item type | Approx. items |
|---|---|
| Number series | 10 |
| Letter series | 6 |
| Logical syllogisms | 10 |
| Deductive reasoning (if-then chains) | 8 |
| Classification (odd one out) | 6 |
| Cause-and-effect statements | 5 |
Number series
Compute differences between consecutive terms. Common patterns:
- Arithmetic (constant difference): 3, 7, 11, 15, ___
- Geometric (constant ratio): 2, 6, 18, 54, ___
- Differences-of-differences: 1, 4, 10, 19, 31, ___
- Alternating two patterns
- Square / cube progression
- Fibonacci-like
- Multi-step (×2 +1, ...)
First 3 seconds: differences. Most series classifiable within 5 seconds.
Letter series
Convert letters to alphabet positions (A=1, B=2, ...). Find pattern in positions, convert back.
Memorise A-N positions. Compute O-Z from N=14.
Logical syllogisms
Drill the basics:
- "All A are B" — universal affirmative
- "No A are B" — universal negative
- "Some A are B" — particular affirmative
- "Some A are not B" — particular negative
Conditional reasoning:
- "If P then Q" → contrapositive "If not Q then not P" (valid)
- Inverse "If not P then not Q" (invalid trap)
- Converse "If Q then P" (invalid trap)
Venn diagrams solve most syllogism items in under 30 seconds.
Deductive reasoning
Format: a paragraph of constraints, then a conclusion to evaluate.
"All officers wear uniforms. Some uniforms are camouflage. Therefore, some officers wear camouflage."
Valid? Yes — particular conclusion follows from the premises.
Drill 30+ deductive items to recognise valid vs invalid patterns.
Classification
Find the most specific shared category. Often more straightforward on AFPSAT than on CSE Pro — items lean toward broader category mismatches.
Cause-and-effect
Two statements; decide if one causes the other, both have common cause, or independent.
Trap: correlation ≠ causation. Read all four options before picking.
A 4-week Logical drilling plan
| Week | Focus | Volume target |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Number + letter series | 80 items |
| 2 | Logical syllogisms (Venn diagram practice) | 80 items |
| 3 | Deductive reasoning + classification | 60 items |
| 4 | Cause-effect + mixed mock | 1 mock + 40 items |
Realistic Logical scores
| Diagnostic baseline | Realistic test-day score |
|---|---|
| 50% | 70% |
| 60% | 78% |
| 70% | 84% |
