FEU-CAT Reading and Mental Ability Review
FEU doesn't publish the FEU-CAT's sections, but past takers describe English (including reading) and mental ability among the areas tested, alongside mathematics and science. This post covers how to practise both. It's part of the FEU-CAT pillar guide.

Two habits that help
- Skim the questions before reading the passage.
- Mark topic sentences and transition words as you read.
Read one English editorial a day while you prepare.
Mental ability
Number series
Arithmetic, geometric, differences of differences, alternating patterns, squares and cubes, multi-step rules.
Letter series
Convert letters to alphabet positions (A=1 … Z=26) and look for the numeric pattern.
Figure analogies
Work out how A becomes B — rotation, reflection, adding or removing elements — and apply it to C.
Word analogies
Name the relationship first, then find the pair with the same relationship.
Syllogisms
- "All A are B", "Some A are B", "No A are B" — use Venn diagrams.
- Conditionals: the contrapositive is valid; the converse and inverse are not.
Spatial reasoning
Rotations, mirror images, paper folding and cube nets.
