LET Secondary: Picking Your Major Field and Why It Matters
Your Specialization is 40% of LET Secondary — as much as Prof Ed. What each major covers in PRC's table of specifications, and how to prepare.

Major Field = 40% of LET Secondary
LET Secondary splits three ways: 20% General Education, 40% Professional Education, 40% Specialization (your major). All three are taken on the same Sunday — Gen Ed from 8:00 to 10:00 AM, Prof Ed from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and Specialization from 3:00 to 6:30 PM. Which means your major carries as much weight as Prof Ed, and you sit it at the end of a long day. Neglecting it is a costly mistake.
Picking Your Major
The Board for Professional Teachers publishes a table of specifications for each Secondary specialization, including English, Filipino, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Values Education, MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health), and Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE). You picked yours during your teacher education programme — the exam tests what you studied, at licensure depth. Most majors are 150 items; Mathematics is 120.
Review Depth by Major
- English: linguistics, structure of English, literature of selected countries, and teaching and assessment of the macroskills and literature. The literature spread is wide — plan your reading early.
- Mathematics: algebra, trigonometry, geometry, statistics and probability, calculus, number theory, plus five areas on teaching mathematics. Calculators are allowed for Math majors only — practise with an allowed model.
- Filipino: linggwistika, istruktura ng wikang Filipino, panitikan, and pagtuturo at pagtataya. The table of specifications itself is written in Filipino.
- Science: biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space science, environmental science, plus methods of teaching science. Breadth is the challenge — rotate domains weekly.
- Social Studies: geography, economics, history, socio-cultural anthropology, governance and laws, trends and issues, plus teaching approaches and research.
Major Field Review Rhythm
Give your major its own 45-minute daily block alongside Gen Ed and Prof Ed. Don't treat it as the third priority — it's equal to Prof Ed in scoring weight. In the final 3 weeks, add timed practice sets focused specifically on your major, sized to the real paper (3.5 hours).
