Test of English as a Foreign Language — required for some US university admissions.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an English proficiency test administered by ETS (US-based). Used for US university admissions + some international job applications.

Versions:

  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-based) — most common
  • TOEFL Paper-Delivered Test

Structure:

  • Reading (54-72 min)
  • Listening (41-57 min)
  • Speaking (17 min)
  • Writing (50 min)

Scoring: 0-120 (iBT); 80-100 commonly accepted.

Cost: USD 200-250 typical.

What it means for you:

  • Most US universities accept either TOEFL or IELTS — pick easier for you
  • IELTS more common for migration; TOEFL more common for US grad school
  • Score validity: 2 years
  • Online preparation widely available (Magoosh, Princeton Review)
