PMA Entrance Exam English Review: Grammar, Composition, Reading

English is one of the three areas PMA says its entrance exam measures, alongside math and abstract reasoning (the SPMA). PMA lists the English coverage as grammar, composition, and reading and comprehension. It doesn't publish how many items there are.

PMA's application page has sample English questions — for example, identifying what kind of noun "English" is (a proper noun) and choosing "more clearly" to complete a comparison. Start there to see the style.

Grammar

  • Parts of speech — including kinds of nouns (proper, common, collective, mass, concrete)
  • Subject–verb agreement — long subjects, "each", "either/neither", collective nouns
  • Pronouns — agreement with antecedents, correct case
  • Verb tenses and consistency
  • Adjectives vs adverbs, and comparatives ("more clearly than")
  • Modifiers — misplaced and dangling
  • Parallel structure
  • Commonly confused words — affect/effect, its/it's, than/then

Composition

"Composition" covers how sentences and paragraphs are built. Practise:

  • choosing the clearest, most correct version of a sentence
  • combining short sentences correctly
  • putting sentences in a logical order to form a paragraph
  • spotting sentences that don't belong in a paragraph
  • using transitions ("however", "therefore", "in addition") correctly

Reading and comprehension

  • Main idea of a passage or paragraph
  • Details stated in the text
  • Inference — what the passage implies
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Author's purpose and tone

Skim the questions first, read the passage actively, and go back to the text for every answer.

A three-week plan

WeekFocus
1Grammar rules and PMA's sample questions
2Composition: sentence improvement and paragraph order
3Reading passages; timed mixed English sets

Read one English editorial or news article a day throughout. It builds vocabulary and reading speed together.
