USTET Mental Ability Review: Patterns, Analogies, Logic
UST lists Mental Ability as one of the four USTET sections, alongside English, Mathematics and Science. No senior high subject teaches it directly, which is exactly why focused practice pays off. UST doesn't publish the item types or counts, so this post covers the pattern types that mental-ability tests commonly use.

Number series
- Arithmetic and geometric sequences
- Differences of differences
- Two alternating patterns
- Squares and cubes
- Multi-step rules (×2 then +1, and so on)
Letter series
Convert letters to alphabet positions (A=1 … Z=26) and look for the numeric pattern.
Figure analogies
Work out how figure A becomes B — rotation, reflection, adding or removing elements — and apply it to C.
Word analogies
Name the relationship first (synonym, function, part to whole, cause and effect), then find the pair with the same relationship.
Syllogisms and logic
- "All A are B", "Some A are B", "No A are B" — Venn diagrams solve most of these.
- Conditionals: the contrapositive is valid; the converse and inverse are not.
Spatial reasoning
- 2D rotation, mirror images
- Paper folding and cube nets — practise with real paper
Quick estimation
- Rounding and order-of-magnitude checks
- Ruling out answers that can't be right
- Quick percentage approximations
Classification (odd one out)
Look for the most specific category all but one share.
