Is a DLSU Degree Worth It? How to Judge the Value

De La Salle University is one of the best-known private universities in the Philippines, with its main campus on Taft Avenue in Manila and a campus in Laguna. Whether a DLSU degree is worth it for you depends on the programme you want, the cost to your family and your alternatives.

We won't quote salary averages or placement rates here — DLSU doesn't publish them in a form we can check, and numbers passed around online vary widely. Here's how to judge the value yourself.

1. Start with the programme

Look at the specific programme you'd enter:

• Curriculum and required subjects
• Faculty and facilities
• Internship and practicum arrangements
• Where recent graduates of that programme work — ask the department or alumni

2. Work out the full cost

Add up tuition and fees for all four years (get current figures from DLSU — they vary by programme and change yearly), plus books, housing, food and transport. Compare that honestly with your other offers; public universities such as UP and PUP charge little or no tuition for Filipino students.

3. Look into scholarships and aid

DLSU offers scholarships and financial aid. Applying is usually separate from the DCAT, so check DLSU's scholarship calendar early and read each scholarship's conditions.

4. The network

Large universities come with big alumni networks, many student organisations and plenty of recruiting events. They help most the students who actively use them.

5. Questions to ask before you commit

• Does this programme lead where I want to go?
• Can my family sustain the full cost for four or more years?
• Have I applied for every scholarship I qualify for?
• How does this offer compare with my other options, programme for programme?
