ACET Reading Comprehension Review
ACET Reading Comprehension Review
The Ateneo College Entrance Test Reading Comprehension sub-test is where consistent English readers bank reliable points. The skill base — reading speed plus comprehension under time pressure — rewards habits over flashcards.
This post is the topic-by-topic plan that the ACET 2026 pillar guide hands off to.
What ACET asks
| Question type | Approx. share |
|---|---|
| Main idea / central claim | 22% |
| Inference | 25% |
| Author's tone or purpose | 15% |
| Vocabulary in context | 18% |
| Detail recall | 12% |
| Logical structure | 8% |
Passage types
ACET passages span:
- Science and technical (~25%)
- Social science / current affairs (~25%)
- Humanities / literary (~30%)
- Philosophy / ethical reasoning (~20%)
The humanities/philosophy lean is distinctive — Ateneo's Jesuit liberal arts orientation reflects in passage selection.
The two reading habits that move scores
- Read questions before passages. Cuts re-read time on detail items.
- Annotate as you read. Underline topic sentences; circle transition words.
Daily reading habit
Single highest-leverage activity for ACET RC:
- One English editorial per day from major Philippine paper
- Plus one humanities-leaning piece weekly (book review, philosophy column, literary essay)
12 weeks of this dramatically improves RC speed and pattern recognition.
Inference items
The largest single block (25%). The pattern:
- Author states X explicitly
- Author implies Y (without stating)
- Question asks: "The author would most likely agree with..."
- Correct answer: Y
The trap: students pick the most clearly stated answer. That's usually wrong for inference items. Drill 50+ inference items specifically.
Author's tone or purpose
Common tones:
- Informative, persuasive, critical, ironic, cautious, optimistic, pessimistic, skeptical
Match tone to passage genre and word choices.
Pacing
ACET RC is time-pressured. ~30-40 items in 30-45 minutes = ~60-90 seconds per item. Plan in passages:
- 4-5 passages × 8-10 minutes each
- Within each window: 2 minutes reading + 6-8 minutes answering 6-8 items
A 3-week ACET RC drilling plan
| Week | Focus | Volume target |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Daily reading habit + 4 timed passages | 28 items |
| 2 | 6 timed passages, focus inference | 42 items |
| 3 | 6 timed passages + mock | 1 mock + 40 items |
Realistic RC scores
| Diagnostic baseline | Realistic test-day score |
|---|---|
| 50% | 68% |
| 60% | 76% |
| 70% | 82% |
