ACET Reading Practice: Passages, Inference and Main Idea
Ateneo lists four multiple-choice areas for the ACET — mathematics, English, general knowledge and abstract reasoning — plus an essay. There's no separately named "Reading Comprehension" section, but strong reading underpins the English area, the essay prompt, and even many general-knowledge items. Ateneo doesn't publish item types or counts, so this post covers the reading skills worth practising.

Question types to practise
- Main idea — what the passage is really arguing
- Inference — what the author implies but doesn't say
- Tone and purpose — informative, persuasive, critical, ironic, cautious
- Vocabulary in context
- Detail — finding an explicit fact
- Structure — how paragraphs relate
Two habits that help
- Skim the questions before reading the passage so you know what to look for.
- Mark as you read — underline topic sentences, circle transition words.
Inference questions
The pattern: the author states X; the question asks what the author "would most likely agree with", and the answer is something X implies but doesn't say. The common trap is choosing the option that simply repeats the passage. Practise inference questions deliberately.
Build the daily habit
- One English editorial a day from a major Philippine paper
- One longer piece a week — a book review, an opinion column, a science feature
Varied reading builds speed and exposes you to the kinds of arguments passages use.
Pacing
Because Ateneo doesn't publish time limits, practise with a timer on full passages and aim to get faster each week. Don't let one hard passage eat your time — mark it and come back.
