UPCAT Application Timeline and Requirements Explained

The UPCAT application window opens earlier than most reviewees realise. For the most recent cycle — UPCAT 2027, for AY 2027–28 — applications ran from 3 to 30 March 2026, while most applicants were still in Grade 11, and the test itself was on 1–2 August 2026. Miss the application window and there's no late entry. The single most expensive mistake any UPCAT reviewee makes isn't a wrong answer on test day. It's missing the application deadline.

This guide walks you through the UPCAT application cycle end to end — when each window opens, who can apply, how the online application works, and the small details that trip applicants up.

The Timeline, Using the Most Recent Cycle

UP publishes each cycle's schedule on upcat.up.edu.ph. Here's how the UPCAT 2027 cycle ran:

• 3–30 March 2026 — online application (Form 1) through UP's UPCAT application portal.
• 3 March – 10 April 2026 — schools submit their part of the application (Form 2A).
• July 2026 — test permits released.
• 1–2 August 2026 — UPCAT test days at 118 testing centres (UP campuses plus partner sites); about 153,000 applicants took it.
• 3–24 August 2026 — entry of applicants' Grades 8–11 grades (Form 2B).
• First half of 2027 — results, per UP. The last two cycles released results on 22 April.

The next cycle, UPCAT 2028 (for AY 2028–29), has not been announced. If UP keeps the recent pattern, expect applications around March 2027 and the test around early August 2027 — but treat that as an estimate and check upcat.up.edu.ph for the official dates.

Who Can Apply

Regular Filipino Applicants

UP's rules for the UPCAT 2027 cycle: you must be a Grade 11 student (graduating from senior high by the next school year) or a senior high school graduate, with complete grades for Grades 8, 9, 10 and 11. You must not have taken the UPCAT before, and you must not have taken any college or post-secondary courses. UP allows one UPCAT per person, with no retakes.

Foreign Applicants

Foreign applicants pay an application fee — ₱450 for resident foreign applicants and USD 50 for non-resident foreign applicants — and should read UP's bulletin for any extra requirements. Filipino citizens pay no application fee.

UP also runs an Iskolar ng Bayan route: Top Ten graduates of public high schools may apply to a UP unit in the same region as their senior high school, or to UP Open University, provided they meet the UPG cutoff. Check the official guidelines for any other category rules.

Forms and Requirements

The UPCAT application is online. You complete your part (Form 1) on UP's application portal, and your school submits its own forms — a school form (Form 2A) during the application period, and your Grades 8–11 grades (Form 2B) later. UP's current bulletin and the application portal list exactly what to upload, so follow those instructions rather than an older list.

Two practical points:

• Talk to your school early — part of your application depends on your school submitting its forms on time. Tell your registrar or guidance office that you're applying.
• Keep your details consistent — use the same name spelling and details as your school records to avoid delays.

Choosing Your Campuses and Programmes

You rank your preferred UP campuses and degree programmes in priority order. UP decides using your UPG (your UPCAT scores combined with your Grades 8–11 grades) and each campus's quota and/or cut-off grades. If you don't make one choice, UP moves to your next choice in order. You can receive an offer from only one of your campus choices.

Most reviewees don't think hard enough about their later choices — and end up with no offer because every choice was a long shot. Rank a realistic option alongside your dream programme.

What the Numbers Look Like

For UPCAT 2026, 147,437 examinees sat the test and 18,350 qualified (12.44%, including waitlisted applicants). For UPCAT 2025, 135,236 sat and 17,996 qualified (about 13.3%). UP doesn't publish per-programme quotas or cutoffs, and competitiveness varies a lot between programmes and campuses.

What you can control — your UPCAT score and your grades. What you can influence — your campus and programme choices. What you can't control — how strong that year's applicants are.

Common Application Mistakes

• Waiting until Grade 12 — for most applicants the application window falls in March of Grade 11. Watch for the announcement early in the year.
• Filing in the last 48 hours — portals slow down near deadlines. File a week early. Always.
• Not checking with your school — your school's forms are part of your application.
• Picking a testing centre you can't easily reach — choose one your family can comfortably get to on test day.

Testing Centres

For UPCAT 2027, UP used 118 testing centres: UP's own campuses plus 109 partner sites around the country. Centres can change from cycle to cycle.

Your test permit tells you your centre and session. UP asks you to arrive by 6:30am for the morning session or by 12nn for the afternoon session. Print your permit and keep a spare copy.

What to Bring on Test Day

UP's list: bring only your

• Test permit
• School ID or any valid government-issued ID
• Two good-quality pencils and a sharpener
• Rubber eraser
• Snacks

What's banned — UP strictly prohibits mobile phones, calculating devices and cameras during the test. The test takes about five hours to administer.

If You Miss the Application Deadline

Hard truth — there's no late application route for UPCAT unless UP officially extends the deadline.

If you've missed it, your options are:

• Apply to other universities — Ateneo (ACET), De La Salle (DCAT), UST (USTET) and PUP (PUPCET) run separate exams with separate deadlines.
• Apply in the next UPCAT cycle — if you still meet UP's eligibility rules (you've never taken the UPCAT and have no college units), the next cycle is your target.
• Transfer route — UP says students with college courses may apply to transfer after earning at least 33 academic units with a weighted average of 2.00 or better, subject to each campus's own requirements.
