What is the UPCAT?
The University of the Philippines College Admission Test — UPCAT for short — is the gate into the UP system. About 153,000 applicants sat the most recent UPCAT (for AY 2027–28) in August 2026. The cycle before that, 147,437 took it and 18,350 qualified (12.44%, including waitlisted applicants) across UP's campuses. The math is brutal, and most takers know it walking in.
UPCAT Schedule
UPCAT 2027 (for AY 2027–28) was held on 1–2 August 2026 at 118 testing centres; results are expected in the first half of 2027 (the last two cycles released results on 22 April). UP has not yet announced the UPCAT 2028 schedule — in recent cycles applications opened in March and the test ran on the first weekend of August. Don't trust forwarded Facebook posts — confirm dates straight from the UP Office of Admissions before you file anything. There's no application fee for Filipino citizens.
What's on the UPCAT
UP lists four subtests in a paper-based test that takes about five hours. Calculators and phones are prohibited. UP doesn't publish item counts or a detailed topic list, so the topic notes below are what the senior-high curriculum covers.
- Language Proficiency — in English and Filipino: grammar, vocabulary, usage. Standard senior-high stuff.
- Reading Comprehension — in English and Filipino: passages with questions on main idea, inference, and detail. Read carefully; the answers reward close reading.
- Science — Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science from your school curriculum.
- Mathematics — Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and the basics of Statistics.
Your UPCAT score is combined with your Grades 8–11 grades into the University Predicted Grade (UPG). UP doesn't publish the weighting.
How to Prepare
A steady 6 to 8 weeks at 45–60 minutes a day is a workable minimum; starting earlier gives you more room. Here's a rhythm that works: take a diagnostic mock first to see which section is weakest, then rotate Math, Science, Language, and Reading so each one gets touched every week. In the final month, run a full-length mock every weekend. That's where pacing and stamina actually get built — you can't fake them on exam day.
