Best UPCAT Reviewer 2026: Books, Apps & Online (Compared)

Most UPCAT applicants go looking for "the best reviewer" at some point. The honest answer: there's no single "best" reviewer. Different formats serve different gaps. The applicant who needs reading speed shouldn't buy the same package as the applicant who's weak on no-calculator math. This guide breaks down the kinds of books, apps and courses you'll find, and what each one is actually good for.

Start from what UP itself publishes on the UPCAT website: four subtests — Language Proficiency and Reading Comprehension (both in English and Filipino), Mathematics and Science — in a paper-based test of about five hours, with calculators prohibited. MSA Reviewers

MSA publishes college-entrance reviewers by Merle S. Alferez, including a UPCAT reviewer and a book of simulated tests for the UPCAT, ACET, DCAT and USTET, sold in bookstores and on MSA's online store. Strengths — covers the UPCAT subject areas with plenty of practice items. Check that you're buying a current edition, and check prices with the seller.

Subject-Specific Reviewers

Several publishers sell reviewers for one subject at a time (math-only or science-only volumes). Strengths — deeper topical coverage, good for drilling your weakest subtest. Weaknesses — buying one for every subject adds up, so pick only the subjects you actually need.

What to Look For in Any Book

Worked solutions or answer explanations, not just an answer key. A book that only tells you the letter can't show you why you got it wrong.

Review Centres and Online Courses

Established Review Centres

Long-running review centres such as Ahead Tutorial and Review run UPCAT review programmes with classes and simulated tests. Strengths — structured pacing, instructors you can ask directly, and a fixed schedule that keeps you accountable. Weaknesses — they cost much more than self-study and follow a fixed timetable. Check each centre's current rates and schedule directly.

Smaller Independent Courses

Many smaller providers run short programmes. Strengths — usually cheaper than the big-brand centres. Weaknesses — quality is highly variable, so ask former students about pacing and instructor quality before paying.

Tight Budget

• One general UPCAT reviewer book

• Free "UPCAT secrets" courses — most are recycled content with a sales pitch attached.
• Paying for one-on-one tutoring without need — hourly tutoring adds up fast and only justifies the cost if you have a very specific gap.

The Quality Check Test

Before buying any reviewer or course, run this quick check:

1. Does it explain wrong answers? Reviewers without explanations are answer keys, not learning tools.
2. Does it cover all four subtests? Many cheaper materials skip Language Proficiency or Reading Comprehension, or leave out the Filipino portions.
3. Is the math practice done without a calculator? Calculators are prohibited in the UPCAT, so practise the way you'll be tested.
4. Is it a recent edition? Newer editions are more likely to have corrected answer keys.

Is one reviewer book enough?

Are free YouTube channels enough on their own?

No. Video alone doesn't give you the practice volume the test demands. Use YouTube as a supplement for difficult concepts, not your primary prep.

Should I buy reviewer books in physical or digital form?
