Pick the wrong reviewer and you've burned weeks of prep. The best CLE reviewer isn't the most expensive one — it's the one whose coverage matches PRC's current subject list and whose rationales actually explain why an answer is right. Here's how to choose across books, apps and online courses as a CLE criminology taker.

What Makes a Good CLE Reviewer

Four criteria. Skip any of them and you've picked badly.

• Coverage of all six subjects — Criminal Law and Jurisprudence, Law Enforcement Administration, Crime Detection and Investigation, Forensic Science, Criminology and Correctional Administration. Single-subject reviewers are supplements, not primary sources.
• Current subject names and topics — PRC's 2026 programme uses "Forensic Science" (formerly Criminalistics) and "Criminology" (which now covers theories, victimology, ethics, juvenile justice and research). A reviewer still organised around the old titles may miss newer topics such as crime mapping, cybercrime and environmental laws.
• Rationale depth — every item should explain the controlling doctrine, not just confirm the letter.
• Timed practice — the real exam runs 3½-hour morning papers and 2½-hour afternoon papers over three days. Without timed practice, pacing breaks on exam day.

Books — The Foundation

Most reviewers build on textbooks by Filipino criminology authors, usually one per subject. What to look for in each:

1. Criminal Law Reviewer

A codal-aligned commentary on the Revised Penal Code (Books 1 and 2), plus criminal procedure and evidence under the 2019 amended Rules on Evidence. This is your anchor for Criminal Law and Jurisprudence.

Theories of crime causation, victimology and professional ethics under RA 11131.

4. Correctional Administration Text

Look for a clear institutional vs non-institutional split and current coverage of BJMP and BuCor jurisdiction, probation (PD 968 as amended by RA 10707) and the GCTA law (RA 10592).

The Catch

Books alone won't get you there. They're great for theory; they're poor for timed practice. You'll need pace under pressure, and that's not a book's job.

YouTube Channels

Free. Quality varies. Look for channels run by current criminology instructors with regular uploads. The trade-off — no progress tracking and no timed item banks. Use as a supplement only.

A combination that covers most reviewers' needs:

• Two textbooks — one for criminal law, one for forensic science.
• A question bank for daily drilling — an app or a printed compilation with rationales.
