LET Secondary Major Field: How the 150-Item Specialisation Subtest Works

Major Field is the day-2 LET Secondary subtest — 150 items in your specific specialisation, weighted at 40% of your final rating. It's the subtest where your undergraduate degree should give you the largest natural advantage, and where lazy preparation closes that advantage faster than you'd think.

This post is the cross-major overview that explains how Major Field is structured. Per-major deep dives (English, Math, Science, etc.) live in their own cluster posts.

The nine major fields

PRC organises LET Secondary Major Field into roughly nine specialisations:

MajorApprox. share of takers
English25-30%
Mathematics12-15%
Filipino12-15%
Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan)12-15%
Biological Science8-10%
Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics combined)5-7%
Values Education5-7%
MAPEH (Music, Arts, PE, Health combined)5-7%
TLE (Technology and Livelihood Education)5-7%

Specialisations like Mathematics-Physics, English-Filipino bilingual, and ICT/Computer have appeared in select cycles but are less consistently offered. Confirm with PRC's bulletin for your cycle that your major is offered.

How each Major Field is constructed

Across all nine specialisations, the items follow a similar structural distribution:

ComponentApprox. itemsWhat it tests
Content knowledge90-105Subject-matter mastery aligned with the K-12 secondary curriculum
Pedagogical content knowledge30-45How to teach the subject specifically
Curriculum alignment10-15K-12 learning competencies, Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs)

The "pedagogical content knowledge" block is the bridge between Prof Ed (general teaching theory) and Major Field (subject mastery). It tests subject-specific teaching: misconceptions students have in your major, scaffolding strategies for difficult concepts, common assessment approaches in your subject.

What "K-12 alignment" means in practice

PRC explicitly aligns LET Major Field items with the K-12 curriculum guides. For each major, the content scope mirrors what a Senior High School graduate-bound teacher should be able to teach. Practical implications:

  • For Math: scope covers Grade 7-12, including Statistics and Probability, General Mathematics, Pre-Calculus, Basic Calculus, Business Math
  • For Science: covers Grade 7-12 spiral progression of biology, chemistry, physics, earth science
  • For English: covers all four macro skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) plus literature appreciation
  • For Filipino: covers wikang Filipino, panitikan, bantas at gramatika, at retorika
  • For Social Studies: covers Araling Panlipunan strands across Grade 7-12 plus the SHS subjects (Pilipinas, Philippine Politics)

If you've been out of secondary teaching practice for years, get a copy of DepEd's Curriculum Guide for your major. The MELCs document is publicly available on the DepEd website. Skim it before you start drilling — it tells you exactly what content scope to cover.

Per-major content priorities

A short orientation per major. Detailed plans live in dedicated cluster posts.

English

Content blocks: language structure (grammar, syntax), literature (Philippine, world, regional), language teaching pedagogy, communication skills, reading instruction, writing instruction. The literature block is heavily weighted — drill major Philippine writers (Rizal, Bonifacio, Joaquin, Bautista, Bulosan) and major world writers (Shakespeare, Greek classics, modernists).

Mathematics

Content blocks: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability, pre-calculus, basic calculus, business math, advanced topics (sequences, series, complex numbers). Pedagogical content tests common student misconceptions — drill the standard error patterns and how to address them.

Filipino

Content blocks: balarila (grammar), panitikang Filipino (Philippine literature), retorika (rhetoric), pagsasaling-wika (translation), pagtuturo ng wika (language teaching). The literature block covers pre-colonial through contemporary; know major writers, major works, and major movements.

Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan)

Content blocks: Philippine history, world history, geography, economics, government and politics, sociology and anthropology, current events. Heavy on history — drill the Philippine timeline, major presidential administrations, and key constitutional and political reforms.

Biological Science

Content blocks: cell biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, human anatomy and physiology, plant biology, animal biology, biotechnology. Spiral progression matters — items can frame the same concept at different K-12 grade levels.

Physical Science (Chemistry + Physics)

Content blocks: atomic structure, periodic trends, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics, modern physics at survey level.

Values Education

Content blocks: philosophy of values education, value formation theory, ethics, moral reasoning, character development, religious education at survey level, Philippine cultural values.

MAPEH

Content blocks: music (theory, history, Philippine folk and contemporary), arts (visual arts, art history, Philippine arts), physical education (sports, fitness, kinesiology), health (anatomy, nutrition, public health, wellness).

TLE

Content blocks: Home Economics (cooking, garments, family resource management), Industrial Arts (carpentry, electricity, electronics), Agriculture and Fishery, Information and Communication Technology, Entrepreneurship.

Time allocation across the 16-week review

Within the broader LET review, allocate Major Field roughly:

WeeksFocusHours per week
1-4Content review across major's primary blocks8-10
5-8Pedagogical content + K-12 alignment6-8
9-12Mock testing + targeted remediation8-10
13-16Mixed mocks + final refinement6-8

Major Field gets roughly 40% of your total review time, matching its 40% weight in the rating.

The "I haven't taught my major in years" reality

Many LET candidates are working in roles outside their major:

  • BSEd Math majors working as bank tellers
  • BSEd English majors in BPO roles
  • BSEd Science majors in pharmaceutical sales
  • Career-shift candidates with a different undergraduate degree pursuing the CMO 75 path

For all of these, the Major Field content is rusty. Expected. Your 16 weeks of review is the rebuild. Don't compare your week-1 diagnostic to where you'll be on test day — the trajectory matters more than the starting point.

Pedagogical content — the easiest 30 points to earn

The pedagogical content blocks (30-45 items per major) reward LET-specific drilling more than they reward subject mastery. These items present teaching scenarios, assessment situations, or curriculum decisions and ask the appropriate response.

A candidate whose subject knowledge is strong but who hasn't drilled pedagogical content items might score 80%+ on content but 55% on pedagogical content — dragging their Major Field score below the 75% target. Conversely, a candidate who has drilled the pedagogical patterns can score 85%+ on pedagogical content even with weaker subject mastery.

Drill at least 60 pedagogical content items in your major during the review. They're predictable in structure once you've seen 30-40 of them.

Realistic Major Field scores

Diagnostic baselineRealistic test-day score
50% (75/150)70% (105/150)
60% (90/150)78% (117/150)
70% (105/150)83% (125/150)
75% (113/150)87% (130/150)

Aim for 80%+ on Major Field. At 40% weight, this gives you the cushion to absorb a weaker Gen Ed performance.
