UPCAT Cutoff 2026: Campus-by-Campus UPG Reality Check
UPCAT Cutoff 2026: Campus-by-Campus UPG Reality Check
There's no single UPCAT cutoff. UP runs eight constituent campuses, dozens of degree programmes per campus, and each programme sets its own University Predicted Grade (UPG) ceiling per cycle. The "UPCAT cutoff" question only makes sense when you name the campus and the programme.
This post walks through the realistic UPG bands by campus and programme cluster, based on the last three cycles. The UPCAT 2026 pillar guide covers the formula behind UPG; this one applies it.
How UPG actually works
UPG is a single number on the 1.0 (best) to 5.0 (worst) scale. UP combines:
- Your UPCAT raw score (across the four sub-tests)
- Your high-school weighted grade average (GWA), normalised across schools
UP doesn't publish the exact weighting between the two, but post-cycle reverse-engineering by previous cohorts puts UPCAT at roughly 60% of the UPG and GWA at roughly 40%. Programme-level quotas then sort the qualifying UPGs and pull a cut line from the top.
A "cutoff" is the UPG of the last admitted applicant in a programme that cycle. It moves with applicant volume and quota. If a programme had 100 slots and 800 qualifying applicants, the cutoff sits low (say 1.95). If the same programme had 100 slots and 250 qualifying applicants, the cutoff sits higher (say 2.6).
UP Diliman — the most competitive
UP Diliman is the system's flagship and absorbs the largest share of strong applicants. Approximate UPG cutoff bands by programme cluster, based on the 2023–2025 cycles:
| Programme cluster | Typical UPG cutoff |
|---|---|
| Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Design | 2.0–2.3 |
| BS Psychology, BS Business Administration & Accountancy | 2.1–2.4 |
| BS Computer Science, BS Math, BS Statistics | 2.0–2.4 |
| BA Communication, BA Journalism | 2.3–2.6 |
| BA Political Science, BA Economics | 2.2–2.5 |
| Most BA programmes (Humanities, Social Sciences) | 2.4–2.7 |
| BS Education, BS Library Science | 2.7–3.0 |
The lower bound of each band is what a conservative applicant should target; the upper bound is what scraped through in the most generous of the last three cycles.
BS Computer Science has tightened noticeably — what cleared at 2.4 in 2022 now lands closer to 2.1. Tech career interest has pushed quota pressure up.
UP Manila — health sciences focused
UP Manila is the system's health sciences anchor. Programme cutoffs sit consistently low because demand for the BS-MD pathways drives the pool.
| Programme cluster | Typical UPG cutoff |
|---|---|
| BS Public Health, BS Nursing | 2.1–2.4 |
| BS Biology, BS Biochemistry, BS Speech Pathology | 2.0–2.4 |
| BS Occupational Therapy, BS Physical Therapy | 2.2–2.5 |
| BS Industrial Pharmacy | 2.2–2.5 |
| BS Development Studies, BA Social Sciences | 2.5–2.8 |
The INTARMED programme (the BS-MD direct path at UP Manila) draws applicants with the strongest UPG portfolios in the system. Realistic cutoff is below 1.5, and a stellar GWA is non-negotiable. This isn't a "with a great UPCAT, anything's possible" programme — without a strong GWA, INTARMED is closed.
UP Los Baños — agriculture, life sciences, engineering
UP Los Baños is broader in offering than people assume — engineering, biology, agribusiness, forestry, IT, and the system's strongest agriculture programmes.
| Programme cluster | Typical UPG cutoff |
|---|---|
| BS Computer Science, BS Statistics | 2.2–2.5 |
| BS Chemical Engineering, BS Civil Engineering | 2.4–2.7 |
| BS Biology, BS Applied Mathematics | 2.4–2.7 |
| BS Agribusiness, BS Economics | 2.6–2.9 |
| BS Agriculture, BS Forestry, BS Fisheries | 2.8–3.0 |
UP Los Baños tends to be a strong "second target" for applicants whose UPG points to UP Diliman engineering as a stretch. Cutoffs are 0.2–0.4 more forgiving than equivalent Diliman programmes.
UP Visayas, Baguio, Cebu, Tacloban, Mindanao
Regional UP campuses cluster into a similar UPG band — generally 0.3–0.6 more forgiving than UP Diliman, with stronger differentiation by programme than by campus.
| Campus / programme cluster | Typical UPG cutoff |
|---|---|
| UP Visayas — Marine Sciences, Fisheries | 2.6–2.9 |
| UP Visayas — Business, Economics | 2.5–2.8 |
| UP Cebu — Computer Science | 2.4–2.7 |
| UP Cebu — Fine Arts, Communication | 2.6–2.9 |
| UP Baguio — Sciences, Mathematics | 2.5–2.8 |
| UP Baguio — Humanities, Social Sciences | 2.7–3.0 |
| UP Mindanao — most programmes | 2.7–3.0 |
| UP Tacloban — most programmes | 2.7–3.0 |
The regional campuses are the realistic UP option for applicants with a strong UPCAT (top 30%) but a moderate GWA (1.8–2.3). They're also where the best dorm and tuition value lives in the system.
UP Open University
UP Open University (UPOU) uses a separate admission pathway — UPCAT scores can support an UPOU application but UPOU is open primarily to working students and second-degree applicants. Don't read UPOU as a "lower-cutoff UP campus." It's a different programme model entirely.
Reading the cutoffs honestly
A few patterns worth naming:
- Cutoffs move year to year by 0.1–0.3 in either direction. What cleared last cycle isn't a guarantee for this one.
- Quotas are programme-level, not campus-level. A "safe" UPG for one Diliman programme is a denial in another.
- First-choice vs second-choice matters. UP lets applicants list multiple programme preferences. If your first-choice quota is full at your UPG, your second-choice may still admit you.
- Regional campuses fill late. Some regional programmes haven't hit quota by initial offer day. A waitlisted applicant at Diliman might receive a Visayas or Mindanao admit two weeks later.
What target UPG to plan toward
Work backward from the programme that actually fits your career interest. If you want Civil Engineering at UP Diliman, target UPG 2.0 — that gives you headroom against quota tightening. If your realistic UPG range is 2.4–2.7, look at UP Los Baños CE instead, where your UPG sits in the safe band.
Use our UPCAT UPG Calculator to estimate the UPG you'd need for your target campus given your current GWA. The calculator handles the GWA normalisation in the same way UP's internal formula does (within a small margin of error).
When to stretch vs. play it safe
The cost of stretching is one cycle. UP's single-attempt UPCAT rule means there's no "next year, retake and try again" — if you don't qualify on your first sit, your option is to enter another university and apply to transfer or accept the qualifying offer you got.
Practical rule:
- If your UPG sits 0.2 above the typical cutoff for your dream programme, list it as your first choice anyway. Cutoffs move and quotas open.
- If your UPG sits 0.5 above the typical cutoff, list a realistic backup as first choice and the dream programme as second.
- Don't list only stretch programmes. UP will not shoehorn you into a non-listed programme just because your UPG would have qualified there.
Where Super Tutor fits
Super Tutor's UPCAT track doesn't publish "you'll qualify for X" predictions — UP's cutoffs move too much for that. What it does is benchmark your mock scores against the percentile bands that have historically converted to admission at each campus cluster. The Free tier surfaces the campus-cluster benchmark; the Focused plan (₱49/week, ₱249/month, ₱1,999/year) opens the programme-level analysis.
