UPCAT Reading Comprehension — build speed and accuracy
Reading Comprehension is one of the four UPCAT subtests, and UP gives it in both English and Filipino. Reading well under time pressure is a skill you build with regular practice, not something you can cram in the last week.
The official rules
The UPCAT has four subtests — Language Proficiency and Reading Comprehension (both in English and Filipino), Mathematics and Science — in a paper-based test that takes about five hours. Phones and calculators aren't allowed. UP doesn't publish item counts, subtest weights or a rule for wrong answers, and it combines your UPCAT score with your Grades 8–11 grades without publishing the weighting.
The last UPCAT was held on 1–2 August 2026. The next one is expected in August 2027 but hasn't been announced by the UP Office of Admissions yet. In recent cycles applications opened in March and the test ran on the first weekend of August.

Where students lose points
Dense passages and answer choices that are almost right slow readers down. Students who read every word at the same pace often run short of time; students who skim too fast miss what the question actually asks.
How to study it
- 1Read something substantial in English and in Filipino every day
- 2For each passage, say the main idea in one sentence before you look at the choices
- 3Check every answer against the passage, not against what you already know
- 4Track which question types you miss — main idea, detail, inference or vocabulary
- 5Practice with a timer so a steady pace becomes a habit
