CSE Verbal Ability review — English and Filipino

Verbal Ability is tested in both English and Filipino. CSC lists word meaning, sentence completion, error recognition, sentence structure, paragraph organization and reading comprehension. Most examinees are stronger in one language, so review both.

The official rules

CSE Professional is a pen-and-paper test of 150 multiple-choice items plus a 20-item personal-data questionnaire, in 3 hours 10 minutes. Calculators and phones aren't allowed. You need a general rating of at least 80.00, and CSC doesn't publish how many items each area has.

The next CSE Professional sitting is on 14 March 2027. Applications open on 2 November 2026, first come, first served. CSC targets results by 11 May 2027.

Where students lose points

Error-recognition items test rules people follow by ear, and the ear is often wrong. The Filipino items catch examinees who assumed they'd be easy.

How to study it

  1. 1Learn the rule behind each grammar error you make
  2. 2Review the Filipino usage pairs that are easy to confuse (ng/nang, may/mayroon)
  3. 3Read in English and Filipino every day
  4. 4Practice paragraph organization by finding the opening and closing sentences first
  5. 5Keep a list of words and idioms you didn't know
