What is the Civil Service Exam?
The Career Service Examination — CSE for short, run by the Civil Service Commission — is what gets you eligibility for government jobs in the Philippines. There are two levels. Professional, for posts that require a 4-year college degree. Subprofessional, for clerical or sub-professional roles. Roughly 350,000 Filipinos sit the Professional level each year.
CSE 2026 Schedule
CSC typically runs the Pen-and-Paper Test (PPT) twice a year — March and August. Confirm your schedule and test site with CSC at least 60 days before filing. Slots fill fast.
CSE Professional Structure
- Verbal Ability — vocabulary, analogy, reading comprehension.
- Numerical Ability — arithmetic, number series, word problems.
- Analytical Ability — logic, data interpretation, reasoning puzzles.
- General Information — Philippine Constitution, civics, current events.
The Subprofessional version swaps Analytical Ability for Clerical Ability — filing, alphabetising, comparison work.
Passing Score
You need 80 to pass the Professional level. Historical passing rates sit around 10–15%. That's not because the test is unusually difficult, by the way. It's because most takers walk in under-prepared and treat it like a guess-the-answer lottery.
How to Prepare
Most passers put in 6–10 weeks. Daily 30-minute drills across Verbal, Numerical, and either Analytical or Clerical depending on your level. Throw in a timed mock every week. And whatever you do, don't ignore General Information — it's the most studyable section in the entire exam, and it heavily rewards memorisation. People leave easy points on the table here every cycle.
